Borderlands 4 Has Over 30 Billion Games, Confirms Art Director

The Borderlands series has consistently been known for its abundant weaponry, and the newest addition is no exception. During a recent chat on the Epic Games Store, Gearbox Entertainment’s Art Director Adam May revealed that players can expect to find more than 30 billion unique firearms!

In other words, it’s a large quantity of information, yet reasonable considering how frequently players change their weapons, try various combinations, types, and elements. The upcoming sequel takes this a step further by incorporating Licenced Parts, enabling weapons to feature components from numerous manufacturers.

According to May, when players grab weapons from a specific manufacturer, they develop a sense of familiarity with how these weapons operate. This process involves close collaboration between the design team and art team to ensure that the visual aspects align with their intended mechanical functions. For instance, if a weapon needs to fire quickly, it’s designed to have sharper, more angular shapes that convey speed. On the other hand, if the weapon launches large rockets frequently, its design is made bigger, rounder, and more bulbous to emphasize its explosive capabilities.

Notably, Jimmy Barnett, who serves as both the lead artist and art director, depicted the substantial amount of guns using a “gun display” or “firearm array,” according to senior project producer Anthony Nicholson.

As a gaming enthusiast, diving into the intricate world of weaponry has never been more fascinating! I recently encountered an expansive blueprint of firearm components, meticulously organized to represent every single manufacturer’s individual gun designs. This all-encompassing diagram allowed me to visualize the distinct elements for each model, as well as envision the various combinations and how they would function seamlessly – from the slides, animators, actions, to the stunning artwork that ties it all together.

For example, one specific firearm might operate smoothly when its parts align a certain way, but adding an extended barrel at the bottom could potentially render those components incompatible due to their dimensions. This comprehensive map has been instrumental in understanding the intricacies of each weapon and appreciating the careful design that goes into crafting such masterpieces.

Everything aligns with the game’s atmosphere, introducing three fresh weapon producers and a populace eager to expand their armories, particularly during rebellions against the Timekeeper. However, whether the rewards are enticing enough for repeated gameplay is yet to be determined.

The highly anticipated video game, “Borderlands 4“, is set to release on September 12th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC platforms. For those using the Nintendo Switch 2, the launch date is scheduled for October 3rd. The game will cost $69.99, with publisher Take-Two Interactive aiming to provide a greater value than its price tag suggests.
