The revival series, titled “Dexter: Resurrection,” seems to be building towards a resolution that the franchise started four years ago. After an absence of almost ten years on television, Dexter Morgan made his comeback in 2021 with “Dexter: New Blood.” Following eight seasons of the original show, Michael C. Hall took some time away from the character but was willing to return if the conditions were right. The show’s original creator, Clyde Phillips, eventually proposed a storyline for “New Blood” that resonated with Hall and allowed him to find a satisfying conclusion for Dexter. While the series was mostly praised, the ending of “Dexter: New Blood” sparked significant controversy as it brought Dexter back only to kill him off immediately, leaving some plot threads unresolved.
Fans thought the finale was a bit hurried, with some parts feeling unfinished, and it failed to deliver on many of its promised storylines. One of the most anticipated plot points in “Dexter: New Blood” was that Angel Batista, Dexter’s old partner and closest friend, would confront Dexter for his fake death and potential involvement as the Bay Harbor Butcher. However, when Dexter discovered that Batista was en route to Iron Lake, he recognized that his arrival could seal his fate in prison. In a bid for freedom, Dexter managed to escape jail, but was ultimately shot and seemingly killed by his son… that is, until doctors revived him in “Dexter: Resurrection.” The new series has enabled Dexter Morgan to continue his story and fulfill some of the promises left unfulfilled.
Dexter: Resurrection Episode 7 Finally Tees Up Dexter and Batista’s Long Awaited Showdown
In Episode 7 of “Dexter: Resurrection”, titled “Course Correction”, we witness the long-awaited confrontation between Dexter and Batista for the first time. Their relationship started off somewhat strained at the beginning of the season, with Batista displaying a degree of suspicion. However, as the story progresses, Batista’s suspicion intensifies, leading him to hunt down Dexter throughout the season. In this episode, after Dexter returns home one evening, he encounters Batista socializing with his family in Blessing’s apartment. It is evident that Batista is trying to apply pressure on Dexter, causing him to propose a ride back to his hotel for Batista.
In the car, Dexter delivers a stern warning to Batista, predicting trouble if he continues his current path. However, Batista remains resolute, refusing to let Dexter escape consequences for past actions. Eventually, Dexter throws Batista out of the vehicle, but not before the detective cleverly plants his AirPods in a hidden compartment on the car door for tracking purposes. As Electric Light Orchestra’s “Showdown” plays, it becomes clear that these two will soon confront each other in a final confrontation.
From my perspective, the events unfolding between Dexter and Batista certainly leave me pondering numerous possibilities. Will Dexter be apprehended and imprisoned? It appears rather improbable given that the plot of Dexter: Resurrection reportedly spans over multiple seasons, and it’s challenging to maintain such a narrative with the main character incarcerated. Could Dexter take Batista’s life? While it may seem far-fetched, Dexter has shown a propensity for considering killing those who have pursued him in the past, like Doakes and LaGuerta. In the case of Doakes, Dexter devised a way to frame him instead of taking his life. However, with LaGuerta, he engineered a trap to end her life, only for Deb to carry out the deed just before he could do so himself.
In the television series “Dexter: New Blood,” Dexter took the lives of Stan Liddy, a former officer who attempted to betray him, and Coach Logan. This demonstrates that Dexter isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty when necessary. Given his past actions, one might wonder if he would be capable of harming someone he once regarded as a friend. As the bond between Dexter and Harrison continues to strengthen, there’s a possibility that Harrison could intervene to protect his father. The upcoming season 1 of “Dexter: Resurrection” is expected to bring more intensity, and it seems likely that Miami Metro detective Batista will need to be handled before the season’s conclusion.
From a die-hard cinema enthusiast’s perspective, it appears rather improbable that Dexter’s troubles will simply vanish with Batista’s departure. Joey Quinn is still at large and Batista hinted he was chasing something significant. It seems plausible that Quinn would step into Batista’s shoes if the latter were to perish. Furthermore, the NYPD isn’t likely to back off from Dexter either. The more I ponder, the clearer it becomes that things are only going to become increasingly complex for our protagonist. It seems like he might have to abandon his vigilantism if he ever hopes to find a way out of this never-ending maze.
