Damian Wayne, the offspring of Batman and the grandchild of Ra’s al Ghul, has been grappling with the conflicting legacies he’s inheriting ever since his debut. Initially, he chose to follow in his father’s footsteps as Batman’s sidekick Robin, but a new path recently presented itself. In the latest storyline of “Batman and Robin,” penned by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Damian uncovers more about his father Thomas Wayne’s past as a doctor. This newfound knowledge has Damian contemplating whether he wants to carry on protecting Gotham City as Robin or make a difference during the daylight hours, utilizing his unique abilities as only Damian Wayne can.
Regrettably for Damian, the malevolent villain Memento has now descended upon Gotham with destructive intentions. Robin narrowly escaped capture thanks to some help from Gotham’s disenfranchised youth, but unfortunately, Memento has taken both Batman and detective Katherine Lautrec hostage. With no other choice left, Damian must make a decision.
Memento Is Here to Punish Gotham
In simpler terms, Memento is a terrifying enigma, either a supernatural being or a deranged individual with a twisted obsession. He manipulates people through mind-altering substances, driving them insane, and seeks to reenact criminal acts in cities, especially Gotham City. His ultimate goal is to recreate the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne using Batman, Lautrec, and their son Damian as substitutes for the original parents. Memento believes that the death of the Waynes marked a significant downfall for Gotham, which was once governed by a noble family who held hope for a better future. In a drug-induced, potentially magical realm, Memento has trapped Batman and Lautrec on a pole in Crime Alley, waiting for Robin to arrive so he can commit a brutal murder before their eyes.
During this time, Damian embarked on a personal exploration. After being torn away from Batman by the resourceful street children of Gotham City, he came to realize that the philanthropic efforts of the Waynes are vital for Gotham, yet both Batman and Robin are crucial as well. People require medical help, but they also need heroes to safeguard them from villains. With fresh resolve, Damian donned an impromptu mask made from ordinary clothing and a rope to rejoin the fight for his father and new ally. Meanwhile, Robin stayed focused on being a hero, allowing Batman to break free and join the fray. As events unfolded, it was revealed that Memento, whose true identity was Daniels – a student of master detective Blye who studied alongside Lautrec and Bruce – was the culprit behind all the chaos. In the end, Blye took matters into his own hands, avenging the victims of Memento by shooting him. Memento plunged into a crowd of spirits from his victims and vanished, marking an end to his cycle. Damian now embarks on a new phase in his life.
The New Damian Wayne and Robin
Damian has conquered his inner struggles and feels certain about his identity now. During the day, he’ll work in Gotham’s hospitals as well as fulfilling his role as a Wayne family member. By night, he’ll act as Robin, dispensing justice wherever he can. He isn’t compelled to take on this role due to inheritance; instead, it’s a choice he makes freely. Plus, he won’t be alone in this endeavor – Batman stands by his side, and there’s also a new ally in the form of a monkey he recently adopted. In Damian’s final sketch for this issue, he even depicted the little monkey wearing her own Robin costume, hinting that she might become more than just a pet, though we can’t be certain at this point. Given Damian’s history with other super-pets, it’s plausible that we could see her again in future stories.
In a symbolic gesture, demonstrating his emotional reunion with his father and acceptance of the mantle as Robin, Damian designed a fresh Robin suit. This new costume bears a striking resemblance to his original one, featuring a hood and the traditional color scheme of green, red, and yellow, replacing the gray version he’s sported for quite some time. With this transformation, Damian has embraced all aspects of himself completely, and the criminals of Gotham should be warned, for a fully realized Robin is indeed a formidable force to reckon with.
