7 Best Green Lantern Constructs, Ranked

Green Lanterns possess extraordinary abilities in comic books, as their rings allow them to bring almost anything they can think of into existence. This ranges from a massive sword to a team of cowboy farmers – and over the years, various Green Lanterns have used their imaginations to create some truly astonishing and bewildering constructs. Today, we’ll be exploring what I believe are five of the most imaginative and captivating constructs that these superheroes have conjured up. Although there are numerous constructs to select from for this list, the ones featured here truly stand out among the more common and less engaging ones. So, let’s dive right in!

7) Multiversal Symbol of Terror

In one of the DC/Hanna-Barbera collaborations, the epic tribute to Gotham’s emblem of dread – Green Lantern/Space Ghost – unfolded. Hal Jordan, responding to a distress signal, was transported to another dimension, where he found himself in a skirmish with Larfleeze. However, Space Ghost mistook the Green Lantern for an adversary. Overpowered and left on a planet, Hal was surrounded by a heavily armed militia, fearing any action could escalate the misunderstanding further. Desperate to avoid conflict, he brainstormed a solution that would deter everyone without causing harm. He delved into his memories for the most intimidating sight imaginable, something that would scare anyone regardless of their universe. Given his encounters with agents of Death and being possessed by the actual Embodiment of Fear, Hal decided upon constructing a colossal Batman figure. To everyone’s surprise, it worked! Even those in an entirely different dimension heeded caution when confronted by the imposing presence of the Dark Knight.

6) Eva GL-01

In simpler terms, each Green Lantern possesses unique abilities, and for Kyle Rayner, it’s his incredible creativity that sets him apart. Being an artist, he brings a unique perspective to his work, creating some of the most imaginative constructs in the universe. One notable example is when Kyle recreated the Eva armor from Neon Genesis Evangelion, which was featured in Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #48. Giant robot armors are common for Green Lanterns as they often use them to tackle big problems. However, what makes this particular instance special is that it’s a clear reference to the original source material, offering fans a delightful treat. It’s intriguing to imagine other Green Lanterns expressing themselves in similar ways without copyright restrictions. Seeing Kyle’s interpretation of an Eva armor was amazing, and while I might have preferred a giant Megazord, an Eva is just as impressive!

5) Universe’s Biggest Pinball

In another instance showcasing Kyle’s ingenious constructs, this one was designed during his mentoring session with Simon Baz. The goal was to prove to him that their powers aren’t confined by ordinary objects. Being accustomed to creating everyday machines like drills and cars, Simon found himself trapped inside a colossal pinball machine controlled by a large Kyle. This unusual demonstration aimed to emphasize the unique power of a Green Lantern – the ability to be unconventionally strange. While we know how to react to an oncoming giant hammer, being ensnared in a ball bouncing erratically against pillars that produce ‘ding’ sounds can certainly disrupt one’s focus. This momentary confusion gives the Lantern an edge, potentially averting injuries before they occur. The creativity displayed here is yet another testament to a Green Lantern’s strength, and it brilliantly illustrates thinking beyond the ordinary. Not only does this construct showcase an innovative use of the ring, but it also serves as an effective teaching tool in the heat of the moment. It’s not just visually striking, but also narratively fulfilling – a winning combination in my opinion.

4) Lobo’s Main Man

The Injustice 2 comics served as a bridge between the first and second installments of Injustice: Gods Among Us video games, often getting quite lively in its narrative. One of the most thrilling storylines involved a conflict between the Green and Red Lantern Corps, with the Reds enlisting Starro the Conqueror. To combat this cosmic threat and bolster their dwindling forces, the Green Lanterns temporarily appointed the infamous Lobo as a Green Lantern. Unsurprisingly, things didn’t go smoothly.

Lobo, known for his crude and violent nature in the DC Universe, unleashed a series of horrors during his tenure. When granted the power to create constructs, he fashioned a giant phallic symbol and used it to attack Atrocitus, causing quite a spectacle.

While not particularly original or intelligent, this construct was perfectly suited for Lobo’s character, offering a touch of humor that, despite its lack of sophistication, was undeniably amusing. Is it clever comedy? Not exactly, but it certainly served its purpose. So, if you’re looking to summon Lobo again, do it right away!

3) The Space Ship

As a film enthusiast, let me tell you, when it comes to Green Lanterns jetting off to their destinations, most keep it simple. But not Kyle Rayner. When Kyle travels, he does it in grand fashion, and I can’t help but be utterly impressed. Take, for instance, the time he crafted an entire pirate galleon, starship-sized, sailing through the cosmos – a ship that sails among the stars! Now, that’s what I call an exceptional pun!

Kyle’s constructs are always a delight to behold, showcasing his knack for fun and creativity. While other Lanterns might resort to brute force in times of trouble, Captain Kyle takes it up a notch. When his spaceship is under attack, he doesn’t just blast away; no, he directs his construct wench to light a fuse with a match, igniting a cannonball from the cannon! It’s a long, intricate process, and it’s simply amazing.

All these unnecessary steps highlight Kyle’s dedication to carrying out his ideas in their entirety. This is Kyle at his finest, a perfect example of what makes him stand out among his fellow Lanterns. This story can be found in Green Lantern volume three, issue #87.

2) Hal Recreates Coast City

As a die-hard Green Lantern fan, let me tell you about an unforgettable moment when I felt a wave of awe. You see, after my beloved Coast City vanished, thanks to Cyborg Superman, Hal Jordan rebuilt the entire city – every single detail, from the grandest landmarks to the smallest street corners. It’s mind-boggling! The secret? His constructs were fueled by the collective memories of his townsfolk, making each building and object miraculously come to life just as I remembered them.

Now, keep in mind these weren’t exact replicas; they were Hal’s interpretations of his hometown. But still, imagine a city running thousands upon thousands of tasks simultaneously – from a simple trash collection to the turn of a car key! Quite amazing, wouldn’t you agree?

This breathtaking scene unfolded in Green Lantern volume three #48 during the infamous “Emerald Twilight” storyline. Unfortunately, that chapter marred Hal’s character for reasons I still can’t quite fathom. Yet, despite this dark cloud, the sheer willpower displayed by Hal Jordan remains unparalleled and is a testament to his resilience and determination.

1) John Stewart Remakes His Sister

Just as I previously mentioned, every Lantern possesses their unique prowess, and John Stewart excels at being meticulous in his craftsmanship. Being an architect, he envisions each intricate component harmoniously forming from the base up when he creates something. Unlike others who might construct a complete object initially, he instead pieces together each detail individually. Truly remarkable is the feat that John accomplished in Green Lantern War Journal #1, where he replicated his late sister, Ellie, using his ring as a tool. This wasn’t just a lifeless replica, but a fully conscious creation born from his memories. Initially designed to bring joy to his mother during her struggle with dementia, Ellie has since grown into something far greater. Now, she is self-governing, a construct infused with sentience, intelligence, and volition of her own. In essence, John Stewart brought life into existence using his ring, a feat that seems almost unbelievable and might even be deemed illegal within the Corps. Regardless, it remains an astounding demonstration of willpower and love. Ellie serves as a testament to the power of determination and affection, standing as the most remarkable construct created thus far.
