In its second weekend, Zach Cregger’s movie “Weapons” continued to dominate at the box office and looks set to do so again this week, expected to earn approximately $25 million in the U.S. This is an impressive hold for the film, as it only dropped by 43%, and its total domestic earnings now stand at around $89 million after just 10 days. Remarkably, this surpasses the entire lifetime box office revenue of Disney’s live-action “Snow White” remake, which was $87.2 million.
Amidst numerous disputes upon its release in cinemas, the remake of the classic tale Snow White failed to create a significant impression. With an estimated budget ranging from $240-270 million, the film opened domestically with a modest $42.2 million and swiftly dropped down the rankings. It suffered a massive 66% decline in its second weekend, ultimately flopping. The movie managed to earn just $205.6 million worldwide.
Eventually, “Snow White” found its audience once it became available for streaming. In June, it was the most watched movie on Disney+, outranking titles like the original animated “Lilo & Stitch” and “Predator: Killer of Killers.” However, this didn’t offset its disappointing box office performance, especially since the live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch” shattered records on its way to earning $1 billion globally. The underperformance of “Snow White” has even led Disney to temporarily halt the production of the live-action “Tangled” remake.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can confidently say that the chilling horror film left an indelible mark on us all. With its intriguing buzz generated by word-of-mouth and an enigmatic marketing strategy, it outperformed expectations in its inaugural weekend, earning a staggering $43.5 million within just three days. In fact, this impressive opening surpassed the total box office revenue of Cregger’s prior film, “Barbarian,” making it a resounding success among audiences.
The movie titled “Weapons” has proved to be another significant success for Warner Bros., with the studio experiencing a revival this spring and summer. This marks the sixth consecutive film of theirs in 2023 to debut domestically with over $40 million, setting a new record. Within just its first weekend, “Weapons” has already recovered its production cost of $38 million. The film’s success has sparked considerable enthusiasm not only for Cregger’s future projects (his Resident Evil movie is now even more highly anticipated), but also for potential expansion in the Weapons universe. There seems to be particular interest in creating a prequel film centered around Aunt Gladys, a standout character played by Amy Madigan.
There’s no reason why weapons should not perform well over the next few weeks, as there isn’t much major competition scheduled for the rest of August. This week’s new release, “Nobody 2,” only managed to claim third place in its debut with earnings of $9.25 million. By leveraging positive word of mouth, weapons could capture a wider audience and dominate the horror/thriller genre until September when films like “The Conjuring: Last Rites” and “The Long Walk” are released. It will be intriguing to see just how high “Weapons” climbs.
