Bob Odenkirk’s Wild Childhood Influenced Nobody 2’s Bloodiest Fight

Initially, when the movie “Nobody” was unveiled, several commentators found Bob Odenkirk an unconventional lead for an R-rated action film. However, in a recent interview with Variety, it emerged that stunt coordinator Greg Rementer believed the fight sequence on a duck boat in “Nobody 2” was Odenkirk’s brainchild, drawing inspiration from genuine experiences – albeit loosely. Even though the production team eventually adopted the idea, Rementer was taken aback by their approach but relished the opportunity. Interestingly, this scene was not filmed in front of a green screen, but rather on a real boat right on the water.

Bob’s recollection traced back to a childhood memory, as he talked about the specific scene. He mentioned, ‘I used to ride on those duck boats when I visited Wisconsin Dells as a child.’ Rementer shared that he hadn’t anticipated having to create choreography around real moving water during filming. He thought they would simply park a boat in front of a blue screen and perform the fight scene.

As I listened to the news that they’d be shooting this scene on an authentic boat, I couldn’t help but feel a thrill. It doubled the potential for engaging interactions, dynamic movements, and immersive atmosphere, as Rementer himself mentioned. While some have drawn parallels between the sequel’s duck boat fight and the bus brawl from the first Nobody movie, Rementer underscored the distinct contrasts between these two action sequences. Unlike the prior buildup where characters let loose their pent-up frustrations, the duck boat fight showcases Hutch holding back his impulses, as he emphasized.

In a recent interview, Odenkirk shared with ComicBook his personal account of filming an action sequence on a precarious surface. He mentioned that some of his colleagues advised against it, but by then he was already fully committed. He believed that the duck boats, a common sight in vacation towns across the U.S., especially Wisconsin Dells, would be easily recognizable to many.

Odenkirk shared that he was advised against doing it, but the producers said something like “you wouldn’t want to have a fight on a boat because it’s just a hassle.” However, his childhood memories of family vacations – specifically, a trip to Wisconsin Dells where they rode on duck boats – inspired him for this film. So, despite being warned that filming on water could be difficult, he insisted on having the fight scene take place on a duck boat to bring his vision to life.

This weekend, no film premiered in theaters, but it’s currently being shown globally. As for the initial feature, you can stream it right now on Amazon Prime Video.
