For captivating television content, there’s no genre we enjoy more than science fiction series. These tales whisk us away on extraordinary journeys through far-off galaxies or send shivers down our spines with unsettling dystopian landscapes. No matter the setting, we’re hooked! However, it’s a familiar feeling to become enamored with a sci-fi show that gets canceled prematurely. This unfortunate event happens across all streaming platforms and networks. And while it can be especially prevalent in science fiction and fantasy, every genre is vulnerable.
It’s quite possible that many people can think of at least one series they’re still upset over being canceled. In fact, it might be easier for most to come up with around six TV shows that could have benefited from more episodes. Fortunately, there’s always the hope of a revival since reboots are quite trendy nowadays.
Below are seven sci-fi series that had the potential to run for much longer than they did.
1) Firefly
A well-rounded science fiction collection can’t ignore the brilliance of Firefly. Regrettably, its premature termination was unfortunate. However, its passionate fan base was unyielding and eventually led to a movie, Serenity, serving as a heartfelt goodbye. While it’s not equivalent to the series we should have had over time, it’s certainly something worth cherishing.
The series titled “Firefly” centers around a group of individuals residing on a spaceship named Serenity, which is a Firefly-class vessel. They are an eclectic mix of people trying hard to evade the Alliance and eke out a living for themselves in the process. Each character has their unique motivation for dwelling on the fringes of space, thereby providing the show with opportunities to delve into various political, moral, and ethical issues.
Expressing it in a more natural and easy-to-read manner:
Without a doubt, Firefly was not just cherished – it was deeply loved by many. Even years after its cancellation, people continue to adore this unique series. However, the show’s initial run was fraught with issues, such as episodes airing out of sequence before its unfortunate end at Season 1.
Since then, whispers of a revival or spin-off have circulated, though no official announcement has been made, save for the movie that came to fruition. Devoted fans can find solace in reading the graphic novels based on the show.
The cast of Firefly included Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Ron Glass.
Firefly is available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu.
2) Helix
Afterward, a science fiction series named “Helix” aired for just two seasons before it was unfortunately cancelled. Although it falls under the genre of science fiction, the show also delved deeply into horror, creating content that could potentially give nightmares. The first season received generally positive reviews from both critics and audiences, but the second season saw a significant decline in popularity. Sadly, this drop-off likely contributed to its cancellation, which is unfortunate since many dedicated fans were eager to see how the story would unfold further.
The thrilling narrative unfolds at a secluded Arctic research outpost, where a group of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are summoned to combat an enigmatic illness spreading rampantly within the facility. Unbeknownst to them, they’ve found themselves engrossed in a life-or-death struggle. If they fail to comprehend and control this horrifying predicament, not only will their lives be at stake, but humanity as we currently recognize it may cease to exist.
Helix is available to stream on Tubi.
3) Defiance
In my opinion, Defiance truly stood out as an exceptional blend of science fiction and western genres, captivating audiences for quite some time. Regrettably, its broadcast came to an end after Season 3 due solely to financial constraints mentioned by SYFY. Coincidentally, the video game spin-off was thriving around that time, only to be closed down a few years later – adding salt to the wound, as they say.
The narrative unfolds in a post-apocalyptic era, where Earth has undergone dramatic changes, now housing both humans and various extraterrestrial beings. In this setting, the story revolves around Joshua Nolan, who serves as the sheriff of his quaint town, named Defiance. This town is home to a diverse range of political conflicts due to the presence of multiple alien species living among them, adding to the gritty, lawless atmosphere reminiscent of the Wild West.
The visually impressive series, Defiance, featuring an exceptional ensemble cast including Grant Bowler, Stephanie Leonidas, Julie Benz, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Graham Greene, Mia Kirshner, Jesse Rath, and others, ended on a disappointing note after the Season 3 finale.
Defiance is available to stream on Peacock.
4) Stargate Universe
The TV show “Stargate Universe” was the third installment to branch off from the “Stargate” franchise, launching a year after the conclusion of “Stargate Atlantis.” Despite this, fan excitement for more content in this universe remained high. Unfortunately, “Stargate Universe” only lasted for two seasons before it ended prematurely. It’s true that “Stargate Universe” was perhaps less popular among viewers than the other Stargate series, but its potential should not be underestimated. Unlike the other shows that started off strongly, “Stargate Universe” introduced a more gradual storyline development. Fans were particularly disappointed with the cliffhanger ending they received.
Once more, the series transported a team into an unfamiliar cosmic realm, presenting fresh challenges and escapades. In Stargate Universe, a motley crew consisting of soldiers, researchers, and ordinary people were united and embarked on a spaceship called the Destiny. Their mission was to traverse billions of light-years away from Earth using Ancient technology (the Stargates). However, something malfunctioned, leaving them stranded at great distance from home with limited assistance.
As a die-hard Stargate fan, I’m thrilled to share that even though the Universe series was unfortunately cancelled, there’s a comic book spin-off now available! However, it’s important to note that the original creative team isn’t part of this new writing venture, so we’ll have to see how they navigate the story without their involvement. The stellar cast of Stargate Universe includes Robert Carlyle, Louis Ferreira, Brian J. Smith, Elyse Levesque, David Blue, Alaina Huffman, Jamil Walker Smith, and Ming-Na Wen. So, let’s dive into this new chapter together!
Stargate Universe is available to stream on Prime Video and Pluto TV.
5) Terra Nova
The “Terra Nova” science fiction series combines past and future elements in an exciting manner, but unfortunately, it managed to complete only one season before getting canceled by Fox. Despite reports of negotiations with Netflix for further seasons, these discussions did not lead to any results. However, a small consolation is that the series later received a motion comic adaptation for a while.
In a dystopian future plagued by overpopulation, Earth has reached an extremely perilous state. Matters were already grim before a temporal fissure emerged. This rift leads to an era resembling the Cretaceous Period, offering chances for adventurers, but with a caveat: once you enter, there’s no returning.
The series provided an intriguing, multi-layered perspective on the politics of colonies and the challenges faced when building new human societies. It would have been thrilling to follow its progression if Terra Nova had been given additional seasons. The cast included Jason O’Mara, Shelley Conn, Landon Liboiron, Naomi Scott, Alana Mansour, Christine Adams, and numerous others.
Terra Nova is available to stream on Prime Video.
6) Farscape
Among all the shows listed, ‘Farscape’ ran for the longest with a span of four seasons. However, its dedicated fanbase would have gladly accepted more episodes if given the chance. Unfortunately, the series was unexpectedly ended, leading to a suspenseful final episode that left viewers unsatisfied.
In simpler terms, “Farscape” is a captivating space odyssey with a lone human protagonist, astronaut John Crichton. His journey commences when he’s inexplicably hurled through the cosmos due to a wayward wormhole, leaving him stranded and unable to return home. Adopting a living spaceship named Moya as his temporary refuge, he forms his own crew over time. Initially, this crew comes together as an escape from the Peacekeepers, but what unfolds is a long-running feud, to put it lightly, throughout the series.
In essence, Farscape offered a lot of distinctive appeal. The Jim Henson Company was responsible for the exceptional prosthetics, alien makeup, and animatronic puppets, which gave the series a truly distinct visual style. Interestingly, Farscape also extended its run in comic book format, as a miniseries. Moreover, the show boasted a large ensemble cast, featuring Ben Browder, Claudia Black, Anthony Simcoe, Virginia Hey, and numerous other talented actors.
Farscape is available to stream on Tubi, Pluto TV, and Prime Video.
7) Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency
Occasionally, you might crave a dash of humor alongside your science fiction, and that’s exactly what you get with “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency“. This TV show is inspired by Douglas Adams’ book series of the same title, but it only ran for two seasons. The show (and books) gained a reputation for being unusual and challenging conventions, which is exactly what many sci-fi enthusiasts seek in their science fiction tales.
The storyline of Dirk Gently’s Intricate Detective Enterprise centers around its namesake, Dirk Gently – a detective with a holistic approach to his work. This term is subtly vague, as it signifies that Dirk unravels complex cases by assuming everything in the universe is interconnected. Accompanying him on this journey are several companions and allies, not forgetting a holistic assassin who works against him.
If you loved Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, it’s highly recommended that you delve into the rest of Douglas Adams’ literary works, given their close connection. Spanning over two seasons, the series boasted the talents of Samuel Barnett, Elijah Wood, Hannah Marks, and Jade Eshete in its cast.
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is available to stream on Prime Video.
