Is Gears of War: Reloaded on Xbox Game Pass?
Reloaded is released in August, subscribers to either Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass will have the opportunity to play it. However, it’s important to note that the game won’t be accessible through Xbox Game Pass Core or Standard.
Gears of War: Reloaded is on Game Pass, but …
One of Microsoft’s longest-running and iconic Xbox gaming franchises is Gears of War, a gritty, violent third-person shooting game developed by Epic Games that was first released in 2006. Since 2015, the series has been managed by Xbox Game Studios’ The Coalition, who have been responsible for creating new installments in the franchise.
The initial game immerses players into the war-torn planet Sera, where humanity is fighting a fierce battle against the underground beastly enemies called the Locust Horde. You’ll find yourself in the combat boots of Marcus Fenix and his comrade Dominic Santiago, battling tooth and nail to force the Locust to relinquish each piece of ground they hold.
The game was previously enhanced for Xbox One and Windows PC in 2015 as part of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. Ten years later, just a year before the anticipated release date of Gears of War: E-Day, it’s being updated once more, this time under the title Gears of War: Refreshed.
Upon its release on August 26, this updated edition of the game promises improved visuals and resolution in 4K, smoother 120 FPS multiplayer, HDR support, spatial audio compatibility, Xbox Play Anywhere feature, and additional features for Xbox Series X|S, PC Xbox version, and Steam. Notably, the game will debut simultaneously on PS5, marking a first for the franchise, as part of Microsoft’s ongoing multiplatform strategy with Xbox.
There’s lots of excitement surrounding the latest remaster, and it’s only natural that people are curious if they can play it using Microsoft’s subscription-based gaming service, Xbox Game Pass. The great news is that as Gears of War: Reloaded is a first-party Xbox game, it will be accessible to Game Pass members from the very start (and Xbox Cloud Gaming compatibility is an added bonus for Ultimate subscribers).
Unfortunately, in order to access the games offered via Game Pass, you will need either a $19.99/month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership (which works on both Xbox and PC) or a $11.99/month PC Game Pass subscription (which is only available for PC users). Those with the basic Xbox Game Pass Core or the $14.99 console-specific Xbox Game Pass Standard tiers won’t be able to play games through Game Pass because these plans do not include day one game access.
It turns out that only those who have an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership at $19.99/month (which supports both Xbox and PC) or a PC-only PC Game Pass subscription at $11.99/month will be able to access the games offered via Game Pass. Users with the basic Xbox Game Pass Core or the console-specific Xbox Game Pass Standard tiers, which do not include day one game access, will not be able to play through Game Pass.
Remember, the opportunity exists to acquire an Ultimate subscription at substantial savings. For instance, a month of Ultimate is available for only $13.49 from CDKeys due to this fantastic offer.
How else can you play Gears of War: Reloaded?
The fact that Gears of War: Reloaded is now accessible on Xbox Game Pass is wonderful news for the multitude of users who subscribe to this service. However, it’s important to note that not everyone may be interested in joining. Fortunately, there are alternative methods to play this remaster without relying on Xbox Game Pass at all.
You can purchase this game for permanent ownership across platforms such as Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PS5. The game retails at a standard price of $39.99. A notable advantage is that buying it on Xbox offers more value due to the Xbox Play Anywhere feature, enabling play on both Xbox consoles and the Xbox app on PC with cross-progression.
If you owned the digital version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition from 2015 on Xbox before May 5, 2025, then good news! Microsoft and The Coalition are providing free game codes for these lucky owners. Look out for these codes in your Xbox messages. Make sure to check your inbox regularly.
