The famed co-creator of Sherlock, Steven Moffat, is now crafting a fresh dramatic series for Channel 4, set within the confines of 10 Downing Street – arguably the globally recognized row house of residences.
The show will focus on the employees and inhabitants of a particular property, who grapple with various challenges, be they global or personal. A fictitious prime minister, representing an undefined political party, serves as one of the key characters.
The storyline indicates that the government portrayed will be imaginary, yet the issues depicted will be genuine and relatable. The political party in control won’t be specified, as when global chaos ensues, the identity of those in power becomes less significant.
As a cinema enthusiast, I’d say: “This story delves into the lives of all who inhabit this building, not just the prime minister on the top floor. It explores the intriguing character of the conspiracy theorist who brews coffee below in the café, the enigmatic figure who constantly tinkers with the unreliable lift, the driven ‘advisors’ who wage wars over tiny office spaces hidden within cupboards.
Indeed, not forgetting the cat, this diverse collection could be likened to ‘a microcosm of Britain’, or even ‘a time capsule of British history’ – although it may seem somewhat chaotic.
As of now, there’s no official announcement about when the project will air or begin filming. However, we can expect a reunion of the team behind Moffat’s Douglas Is Cancelled, with Ben Palmer as the director and Sue Vertue in an executive producer role.
As a movie buff myself, I can’t help but feel thrilled about collaborating with Channel 4 on Number 10. This project is something truly special for Steven, a labor of passion if you will. He mentioned that there are three iconic doors in the world – he’s already worked on 221B Baker Street and the TARDIS; now, it’s time to tackle the real one!
Gwawr Lloyd, who is temporarily in charge of dramas at Channel 4, stated: “We’re excited to have Steven Moffat’s latest creation, Number 10, coming to our channel. It’s a daring, intelligent, and humorous new drama from the talented Hartswood Films crew.
The tenth program will provide an exclusive peek into the private realms of some of the most well-known political homes across the globe. This journey will lead viewers through the strategic choices made by leaders, as well as showcasing the daily lives of the employees who ensure the smooth operation of these prestigious households.
“An insightful and entertaining twist on a state of the nation drama.”
