Even though I joined the conversation a bit later, I recently had the pleasure of watching the Broadway production of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” from 2016, and I genuinely enjoyed it!
Despite the long-standing desire for a film adaptation, the story of Harry Potter remains confined to the stage, and it appears that the only forthcoming Potter content will be the upcoming HBO series.
On the other hand, I strongly believe that this tale should transition from its current form to a movie adaptation, and here’s why I feel that way.
The Play Moves Very Quickly, And I Think A Movie Could Make Things Clearer
I must confess that I had a chance to go through the script for “The Cursed Child” quite some time back, and to be honest, I wasn’t a fan of it. My personal opinion is that it didn’t resonate with me in the same way as the books that served as the foundation for the beloved “Harry Potter” movies.
However, unlike reading a play, watching a play provides a distinct experience. Although certain plays are compelling even when read alone, experiencing this particular performance live was crucial for me to grasp the entire storyline effectively.
Despite being watchable, the fast-paced nature of it made it somewhat hard to follow. A film adaptation might alleviate this problem, however.
In the initial stages of the play, our protagonist, Albus (Harry’s son), spends several years at Hogwarts. The performance incorporates characters jumping and throwing luggage to portray the passage of time, but this can initially be perplexing. Conversely, a film could simplify this by stating “Year 1 at Hogwarts,” followed by “Year 2,” making it more straightforward for viewers to comprehend the sequence of events. Therefore, the narrative might be easier to follow if presented in a cinematic format.

The Original Cast As Adults Would Be Amazing
It’s neat that Tom Felton is going to portray Draco Malfoy once more, this time on the Broadway stage, don’t you agree?
Now, imagine this scenario – wouldn’t it be fantastic if EVERY SINGLE member from the original cast returned for a film adaptation? The plot would unfold with Harry, Draco, and Hermione taking on roles at the Ministry of Magic, while their children attend Hogwarts, forming half of the storyline.
I can easily envision widespread excitement if it were announced that they were all returning. Regrettably, Maggie Smith (who plays Professor McGonagall in the production) is unable to return due to her passing. However, if the other surviving cast members could make a comeback, it would truly be wonderful.
Moreover, it would be quite remarkable if they all returned, given that their careers beyond Potter have led them to distinct paths. Therefore, it would truly seem like a gathering of old companions.

The Story Feels Necessary If You’re A Harry Potter Fan, And More People Can See A Movie Than A Play
In conclusion, during the performance, I found myself reflecting on how significant it must feel for a Harry Potter enthusiast.
Regrettably, many individuals may not have the opportunity to witness Broadway productions, which means they might miss out on a significant storyline from Harry Potter, and that’s truly disappointing. While they could always read the script instead, I explained earlier that the script can be somewhat confusing (not to mention, the magic is more captivating when you experience it live).
In truth, the enchantment in this play is so captivating that I can’t help but wish for a cinematic version. Given the central role of time travel in this narrative (the time-travel element from “The Prisoner of Azakaban” in particular), it would be fascinating to see how it ties back to scenes from the third film.
One reason I believe this movie might outshine the play is due to its broader reach; more individuals can enjoy it. Additionally, it can link back to scenes from previous Harry Potter films, creating a sense of continuity and familiarity for fans.
What do you think? Have you seen the play? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
