From a cinephile’s perspective, I can’t help but acknowledge the significant influence that Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films have had on the comic book genre and its prominence within contemporary cinema. Yet, it’s essential to remember that the roots of this genre go much deeper, with superhero movies having graced our screens for over half a century. Contrary to popular belief, most comic book adaptations aren’t simply carbon copies of their source material; they often venture off the predetermined narrative paths. This creative liberty occasionally results in unforeseen plot twists, which can drastically impact the climaxes of these films. As a result, predicting the endings of comic book movies isn’t always a straightforward task.
In a remarkable fashion, these comics-turned-movies have concluded in truly outstanding ways. Regardless if they’re poetic, satisfying, or simply heartwarming, the finest comic book movie endings shine brightly among their counterparts. Crafting an ending that’s just right isn’t simple, but these selected comic book films managed to serve up flawless finales.
7) Spider-Man 2 (2004)
2004’s Spider-Man 2 not only offered some of the most thrilling Spidey action sequences, but its finale was particularly well executed. After a tense relationship with Mary Jane, the movie concludes with her discovering Peter Parker’s secret identity. The poignant moment when she leaves her wedding to be with Peter is heartwarming, and the subsequent call to duty he receives along with MJ’s blessing to continue fighting crime as Spider-Man is truly remarkable. It’s an ending that felt destined, but its fulfillment remains incredibly gratifying as Spider-Man swings off into the New York cityscape.
6) Watchmen (2009)
turning the world against Doctor Manhattan. The film concludes with a shocking twist and a bleak, questionable moral outcome that fits well with the overall mood of “Watchmen” and its world.
5) Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
In an unusual take on the traditional Spider-Man narrative found in other films, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” chose to present Miles Morales as the new web-slinging hero. This film serves as a Multiverse origin story where Miles grapples with self-doubt throughout his journey. However, the finale sees Miles gaining self-assurance and accepting his role as his universe’s sole Spider-Man, rising up to become the city’s needed hero in an empowering final scene that effectively showcases the movie’s stunning animated aesthetics to offer a touching conclusion to its storyline.
4) Iron Man (2008)
The first film in Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 1 not only narrated its own tale, but also established the blueprint for a groundbreaking series. In 2008, Iron Man made its debut as a movie, serving as an origin story for the titular character. However, the film’s finale deviated significantly from the comics, with Tony Stark publicly unveiling his heroic persona, a fitting conclusion for Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of the character. This climactic scene turned out to be a truly remarkable moment in the MCU.
3) The Dark Knight (2008)
Generally regarded as one of the top superhero movie sequels ever made, the 2008 film The Dark Knight continues to be a fan favorite among comic book adaptations. The film’s climax has Batman accepting responsibility for Two-Face’s crimes to safeguard Harvey Dent’s reputation. Towards the end, Gary Oldman’s character James Gordon delivers a heartfelt monologue in voice-over to his son, explaining why Batman’s selfless act of sacrificing his own image is truly heroic and beneficial for Gotham City.
2) Logan (2017)
Some people believe that the film “Logan” stands out as the finest comic book movie ever created, although opinions may vary. However, it’s generally accepted that the movie’s finale is truly exceptional. Throughout the film, Logan’s powers deteriorate, but he ultimately fights to protect his daughter. He emerges victorious from the battle, only to succumb to his injuries afterwards. The poignant scene where Logan accepts death with a sense of relief offers a bittersweet conclusion to his on-screen journey, making it a fitting end to the movie.
1) Avengers: Endgame (2019)
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has consistently smashed box office records, with its films’ popularity being evident. Moreover, it has not only set new standards but also provided several flawless conclusions, particularly in the movie “Avengers: Endgame.” In this film, Iron Man sacrifices himself to halt Thanos, which leads Steve Rogers to decide to retire peacefully into the past alongside Peggy Carter – a heartwarming reunion that serves as an ideal culmination of Iron Man’s journey. This emotional scene also marks a poignant finale for “Endgame,” adding another layer to its grand tale.
