MachineGames, in collaboration with Nvidia, has revealed that the upcoming expansion for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, titled The Order of Giants, will introduce support for Nvidia RTX Hair. This means that, upon its release on September 4, PC gamers playing with an Nvidia graphics card will notice enhanced hair effects on main characters within the game.
As stated by Nvidia, RTX Hair utilizes advanced strand-based methods to create realistic hair effects in video games. Consequently, developers can produce hair that appears intricately geometric, enhancing visual detail. Moreover, the hair rendered with this technology interacts more authentically with in-game lighting, featuring lifelike light and shadow responses.
Utilizing Linear-Swept Spheres primitives, Nvidia optimizes this computationally intensive method for rendering realistic hair within gaming engines. This optimization enables a more efficient approach to tracing light paths for a lifelike hair appearance.
It’s important to mention that since RTX Hair in the game requires an Nvidia GeForce RTX 50-series graphics card, this advanced hair feature won’t be accessible in the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game. Instead, it will only appear in the PC version, and even then, it will only show up for players who are using a current-generation Nvidia graphics card.
It was revealed in June, during an Xbox Games Showcase, that Indiana Jones’ new adventure, titled “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle – The Order of the Giants,” is on its way. This expansion will have you exploring secretive underground tunnels beneath Rome as Indiana Jones, seeking to unearth the ominous past of colossal beings known as the Nephilim giants. A trailer was unveiled along with the announcement.
In July, design director Jens Andersson explained during a talk at Develop:Brighton why MachineGames decided to adopt a first-person view for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. He stated that this choice of a first-person camera was essentially non-negotiable for the studio.
He stated, “To truly embody Indiana Jones, you should see things from his perspective, feel as if you are him.
He stated that our goal was to create an immersive experience similar to Indiana Jones for you, the player. While we knew it would be challenging, we managed to achieve it, he remarked. It took a considerable amount of time, but it wasn’t the most difficult aspect of game development. Rather, there were other elements that I believe we didn’t fully grasp until the final stages.
MachineGames is known for crafting immersive narratives in single-player games, always maintaining a first-person perspective. This trait is evident in their Wolfenstein series, such as The New Order (2014) and The New Colossus (2017). Even spin-offs like the VR-exclusive Cyberpilot and co-op game Youngblood continued to adhere to this first-person viewpoint.
The adventure game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, initially debuted on PC and Xbox Series X/S, later landing on PS5 in April. The game saw significant success on PlayStation’s platform, with predictions suggesting it could be one of the fastest-selling editions, selling approximately 117,200 copies within its first week.
