Harry Potter star in first look at “highly anticipated” crime drama based on best-selling books

As a captivated cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that this upcoming fall, the radiantly transformed Harry Potter star, Matthew Lewis, takes center stage in the gripping new detective series titled “Murder By Evensong,” airing on Channel 5. The show is an adaptation from the novel penned by none other than the reverend and multi-talented individual, Richard Coles. Prepare yourself for a rollercoaster of suspense and intrigue!

In this six-part series, they’ve brought the events from the initial “Canon Clement Mysteries” novel to life, where Lewis steps into the shoes of the priest unwittingly entangled in a murder case, assuming the central role.

Without a doubt, the actor garnered widespread recognition for playing Neville Longbottom throughout the entire Harry Potter series, starring in each film from The Sorcerer’s Stone to The Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

Lately, some of his work involves the British drama series All Creatures Great and Small, as well as Romesh Ranganathan’s BBC comedy show Avoidance, which he joined for its second run.

Currently, he might be starting a long-running detective series, given that Reverend Cole’s Canon Clement Mysteries encompass five instalments so far, hinting at numerous future possibilities.

Daniel (portrayed by Lewis) resides in Champton rectory with his widowed mother Audrey (played by Amanda Redman, previously mentioned). This living arrangement also includes two dachshunds named Cosmo and Hilda.

When Daniel proposes a modernisation scheme for the church, the congregation splits into factions unexpectedly. Subsequently, a corpse is discovered at the church’s rear.

In addition to the main actors in Murder By Evensong, Amit Shah takes on the role of Detective Sergeant Neil Vanloo, who will encounter Canon Clement during their investigation.

Shah has recently starred in popular dramas such as Happy Valley and Mr. Bates vs The Post Office, and you might remember him from Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Crashing or Ben Aldridge’s The Long Call as well.

In addition to the already mentioned cast members, you might also encounter actors like Adam James from The Day of the Jackal, Meghan Treadway from One Day, Marion Bailey from The Crown, Amanda Hadingue from Kaos, Tamzin Outhwaite from The Wives, Francis Magee from Kin, and Nina Toussaint-White from Showtrial. Furthermore, a new face to look out for is Alexander Delamain.

In a new adaptation, renowned character actor Nick Hicks-Beach (known for his roles in DCI Banks and Midsomer Murders) is set to bring Reverend Coles’ novel to life on screen. The directorial duties will be entrusted to David Moore, who previously worked on Fool Me Once.

Murder Before Evensong is coming soon to 5.
