The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox & More Shows Based on True Crime Cases

When Amanda Knox was falsely imprisoned for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher while studying abroad in Italy, there were countless opinions about her case. Now, Knox, who has been cleared of all charges, is sharing her story as an executive producer on Hulu’s new series, “The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox,” with Grace Van Patten portraying the lead role. As she recently told The New York Times, the show provides a chance for people to gain a better understanding of the case and form their own opinions based on facts rather than sensationalized news reports. At the time, Knox was just a 20-year-old girl going through an unimaginable ordeal. Knox and her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were initially accused of murdering Kercher in 2007, and their legal battle made headlines for years. They were convicted of murder in 2009, had their convictions overturned in 2011, were re-convicted in 2014, and ultimately exonerated again in 2015.

However, Knox says the Hulu show goes beyond the final verdict.

The series is more than just a typical courtroom drama about Amanda Knox’s release from prison; instead, it delves into the long-term effects of the courtroom trauma and how one rebuilds their life and regains faith in humanity by taking risks. This story follows Amanda’s personal journey, as she takes a significant risk to trust people again and explores both the advantages and disadvantages of that decision.

Collaborating with Monica Lewinsky, another public figure who has experienced being at the heart of media frenzy, Knox wanted to share this aspect of her journey. She emphasized the importance of showing the aftermath because, once labeled and devalued, it’s crucial to emerge as a more complex individual with greater worth than society initially acknowledged.

The series, titled Amanda Knox: A Twisted Tale, premieres on Hulu Aug. 20. While this isn’t the first true crime case to inspire a real-life drama, it’s certainly one that has captured the attention of many. Don’t miss these other IRL dramas that became must-see TV.

In 2007, Amanda Knox, then a 20-year-old student abroad in Italy, found herself embroiled in a murder case alongside her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito. They were initially convicted of the murder of their roommate, Meredith Kercher, in 2009. However, their convictions were overturned in 2011, only to be reinstated in 2014 and then overturned again in 2015.

Rudy Guede was convicted of Kercher’s murder in a separate trial in 2008 and released from prison in 2021. Knox, who had been found guilty of slander for falsely accusing Patrick Lumumba of Kercher’s murder, is portrayed by Grace Van Patten in the series.

Twenty-one years following O.J. Simpson’s acquittal in the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman, Ryan Murphy unveiled the first season of American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson.

This Emmy-winning series showcased a talented ensemble cast, with Cuba Gooding Jr portraying Simpson, Sarah Paulson and Sterling K. Brown playing prosecutors Marcia Clark and Christopher Darden, and John Travolta, David Schwimmer, and Courtney B. Vance depicting the defense’s Robert Shapiro, Robert Kardashian, and Johnnie Cochran respectively.

In a 1997 civil trial, Simpson was held accountable for the deaths of Brown and Goldman. Later, he served nine years in prison after being accused of robbing sports memorabilia dealers in 2007 and convicted of armed robbery, kidnapping, and other charges in the year that followed.

Simpson passed away in 2024 following a struggle with cancer.

In the second season of “American Crime Story,” the FX series delved into the 1997 murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace. Darren Criss won an Emmy for his depiction of serial killer Andrew Cunanan, and he’s discussed the method behind his portrayal. As an actor, Criss, who is known for his role in “Glee,” stated in a 2018 interview with Larry King, “My profession revolves around empathy.” Although the actions were reprehensible and unforgivable, he explained that when you explore deeper and attempt to identify shared aspects between yourself and another person, you’ll discover more similarities than differences. Alongside Criss, Édgar Ramírez portrayed Gianni, Penélope Cruz played his sister Donatella Versace, and Ricky Martin took on the role of Gianni’s partner Antonio D’Amico.

In the series named The Dropout, Amanda Seyfried portrayed Elizabeth Holmes, a person who was convicted of defrauding investors in her blood testing company Theranos for hundreds of millions of dollars and sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2022. Despite Amanda winning an Emmy for her performance, Elizabeth asserts that the Hollywood portrayals do not represent her true self, stating in The New York Times in 2023: “They’re not playing me. They’re playing a character I created.” She further explained that she constructed an alter ego to be successful in business and avoid being perceived as a young girl or someone with weak technical ideas, which people may have picked up as inauthentic since it wasn’t.

HBO’s drama The Staircase is based on the case of Michael Peterson.

In 2001, Peterson was implicated for the murder of his wife, Kathleen Peterson, who was found deceased at the bottom of the staircase in their North Carolina residence. Two years later, a court convicted him of first-degree murder and imposed a life sentence without parole. However, a retrial was ordered in 2011 when the defense alleged that evidence had been falsified by former State Bureau of Investigation agent Duane Deaver. In 2017, Peterson accepted an Alford plea for voluntary manslaughter, although he continued to assert his innocence, having already served time in prison, he was released. Colin Firth portrayed Peterson in the 2022 miniseries, with Toni Collette as Kathleen, Sophie Turner as their daughter Margaret, and Patrick Schwarzenegger as their son Todd.

Anna Delvey, also known as Anna Sorokin, was the central character in the Netflix series titled “Inventing Anna,” portrayed by Julia Garner.

Delvey was sentenced to serve between four and twelve years in prison in 2019 following her conviction for theft services, grand larceny, and attempted grand larceny. Known as a fraudulent heiress, she was released from prison in 2021, only to be taken into custody by ICE shortly after. She was released again in 2022 but was mandated to complete her sentence under house arrest.

Julia Garner’s portrayal of Delvey earned her an Emmy nomination and drew praise for accurately capturing Delvey’s distinctive accent. In a conversation with The New York Times in 2022, Delvey herself commented on Garner’s portrayal, saying, “It’s really hard to tell where she would be from.” Delvey, who moved from Russia to Germany as a teenager, added, “She got it right in a way.

In the Hulu series “The Act,” Joey King portrayed Gypsy-Rose Blanchard, who admitted guilt to a second-degree murder charge for collaborating with boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn in the killing of her mother Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard.

Blanchard testified that her mom mistreated her and led her to believe she had health problems that were not real-with her lawyers claiming Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy.

Interestingly, the star of “Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up” was impressed with King’s Emmy-nominated performance. However, she was less favorable in her criticism of Patricia Arquette’s depiction of her mother.

Back in May of 2024, five months following my release from prison, I shared my thoughts with Us Weekly about Joey King’s incredible portrayal of me in a recent production. I must admit that when it came to Patricia Arquette’s performance as my mother, I found myself being slightly more critical – after all, it was my life we were dealing with. Being deeply invested and somewhat overly discerning, I always find it challenging to watch someone else embody my experiences.

Evan Peters initially felt apprehensive about portraying Jeffrey Dahmer, the notorious serial killer known for murdering 17 young men between 1978 and 1991. In 2022’s “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”, Peters confessed to Netflix’s Tudum that taking on this role was a daunting task due to the heinous acts committed by Dahmer. He explained that to deliver an authentic performance, he would need to venture into disturbing territories and dwell there for an extended period. This proved to be one of the most challenging endeavors in his acting career.

Peters eventually won a Golden Globe for his portrayal, while Niecy Nash received an Emmy Award for her depiction of Glenda Cleveland, the neighbor who repeatedly contacted the police regarding Dahmer.

In the TV series titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story“, actors Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch portrayed the brothers in question, who were convicted for murdering their parents Jose and Kitty Menendez. Their roles were played by Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny, respectively.

The convictions in 1996 followed a mistrial during which the defense claimed the 1989 killings were acts of self-defense in response to years of abuse from their father. On the other hand, the prosecution argued that the siblings murdered their parents for financial gain. Importantly, a judge barred testimony regarding the abuse allegations in the second trial.

Sentenced initially to life imprisonment without parole, they were given 50 years to life sentences by a judge in 2025, becoming eligible for parole. Although Erik initially criticized the show, Lyle later told TMZ’s 2 Angry Men podcast that it helped many people understand the childhood trauma that both brothers experienced.
