The long-awaited portable Xbox console, ROG Xbox Ally, was first announced in June following a flurry of rumors and anticipation. Ever since then, gamers have been on tenterhooks for updates regarding the handheld’s official release date and cost. At last, after much speculation, Microsoft has officially confirmed that the ROG Xbox Ally will hit the market soon. The good news? It won’t be long before we can get our hands on it!
During a Gamescom stream on August 20th, Microsoft officially revealed that its upcoming handheld Xbox console, named ROG Xbox Ally, will hit shelves on October 16th. As rumored before, this is the date for the device’s release. At present, pre-orders have not been made available yet, but they are anticipated to be listed within a few weeks. The way players can reserve their unit will likely resemble Nintendo Switch 2’s queue system as seen on Nintendo’s website.
ROG Xbox Ally Confirms Release Date, But Price Is Still a Mystery
Due to the console not being available for purchase yet, Microsoft and ROG have chosen to keep the price a secret. Although the official release date was announced today, the cost of the ROG Xbox Ally remains unknown as of now.
It’s clear that, much like the existing generation of Xbox consoles, there will be two variants of the ROG Xbox Ally. The higher-end model, called the ROG Xbox Ally X, boasts more impressive specifications with 24 GB RAM and a storage capacity of 1 TB, making it a comparable premium choice to the Xbox Series X. On the other hand, the standard ROG Xbox Ally is likely designed as a more affordable alternative akin to the Xbox Series S, featuring 16 GB RAM and 512 GB memory.
Currently, neither variant has been definitively given a price. However, leaks hint that they might be priced comparably to other ROG handhelds. The standard model is speculated to be approximately $550 USD, whereas the Xbox Ally X is rumored to cost around $900 USD. Though DealLabs’ @billbil-kun, a source often known for accuracy, has shared these price speculations, they have not been officially verified yet.
Just like Nintendo did before them, Xbox decided not to disclose the price along with the release date during their announcement. In a chat with IGN, Microsoft mentioned they are delaying the price reveal to better gauge the current economic situation worldwide. This tactic reminds us of a similar issue surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2, where pre-orders were postponed in the U.S. due to tariff adjustments. At this point, it’s uncertain if U.S. pre-orders will face the same delay, but the release date scheduled for October 16th remains unchanged.
It’s clear that interested individuals will be able to obtain the new handheld Xbox device in time for the upcoming holiday season. With the announcement of its first officially certified game, it seems we are on the verge of discovering if the ROG Xbox Ally will become a significant player in the realm of portable gaming.
