Square Enix, known for producing many popular games, often finds their titles restricted to specific gaming platforms. This is sometimes due to exclusivity agreements or other circumstances. While it’s not always clear why some of these games aren’t available across all platforms, it can be annoying when your preferred platform misses out. However, fans received a pleasant surprise as Square Enix decided to release a 2022 Nintendo Switch exclusive game on additional platforms unexpectedly.
The discussed game goes by the title Triangle Strategy, and it’s the latest project from Tomoya Asano, renowned for his contributions to the Octopath Traveler series. Fans have been taken aback positively today as Square Enix has unveiled the game’s simultaneous launch across various platforms – PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Microsoft Store. The suggested retail price for this game is $59.99, though it’s currently discounted. It’s essential to mention that there’s a time-limited offer: the game can be purchased at 30% off on the Microsoft Store, reducing its cost to $41.99 over the next fortnight. This deal applies to all users, but only PlayStation Plus subscribers on PS5 are eligible for a similar price reduction. For those interested, a new trailer for the game is available below.
A Game for the Final Fantasy Tactics Fan
For those new to the game, Triangle Strategy is a role-playing game (RPG) that emphasizes strategic tactics, much like Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Tactics. This tactical focus has led many to make comparisons between the two games, as Final Fantasy Tactics is set to be remastered soon. The game also sports an art style akin to Octopath Traveler, often referred to as HD-2D. Since its release in 2022, Triangle Strategy has garnered much acclaim for its engaging gameplay and artistic design, although some players have expressed concerns about the extensive dialogue in the game.
According to Christian Hoffer’s review on ComicBook for the Nintendo Switch version of ‘Triangle Strategy’, he gave the game a rating of 4 out of 5. He mentioned that one drawback of the game was its slow pace, particularly highlighting the lengthy cutscenes and dialogues that consume a significant amount of gameplay time.
What’s Next for HD-2D and Tomoyo Asano
Square Enix has been successful in creating a graphic style that resonates with players, particularly the HD-2D format, which gained popularity following the release of Octopath Traveler. This autumn will bring us Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, jointly developed by Square Enix and ARTDINK, much like Triangle Strategy. On a different note, Asano, the producer, has announced a game set for 2026 release titled The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales. This upcoming title seems to diverge from Square Enix’s usual offerings, appearing to draw inspiration from Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series. Unlike many Square Enix games, this one won’t be exclusive to a single platform; it will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC.
