The Penguin Season 2 Gets Disappointing Update (& It’s The Batman 2’s Fault)

The anticipation for the next installment of ‘The Batman Part II’ eased slightly when ‘The Penguin‘, a spin-off series, came out. This new show delved deeper into the Batman Epic Crime Saga, focusing on Oz Cobb as he maneuvered his way through Gotham’s criminal underworld following the Riddler’s destructive acts. ‘The Penguin’ received numerous accolades, garnering 24 Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Given its popularity, there was a strong demand for another season. However, if ‘The Penguin’ Season 2 were to materialize, fans might have to be patient to watch it.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Lauren LeFranc confirmed that the series The Penguin was initially designed as a limited series, implying a second season is not yet assured. If there’s a season 2, it may not premiere until after The Batman Part II has been released in theaters. LeFranc explained, “Our initial plan for the first season was to introduce Oz into the next film, so we couldn’t air a second season until after [Matt Reeves’] movie is out.

The Batman Part II is the Top Priority for Matt Reeves

The series “The Penguin” was intended to serve as a link between director Reeves’ first two Batman films, as LeFranc herself explained several months before its debut. In essence, they were moving straight into the second film that Matt had already planned. Given this context, it’s not surprising that the creative team is currently focusing on “The Batman Part II.” It’s anticipated that Colin Farrell will reprise his role as Oz Cobblepot (Oz Cobb) in the much-awaited sequel, and how his character develops in the film will significantly impact the storyline of The Penguin.

As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but reflect on the resounding success of “The Penguin.” It’s easy to envision Reeves and LeFranc capitalizing on its critical acclaim by diving straight into a second season. However, the anticipation for “The Batman Part II” has grown beyond expectation, with fans eagerly awaiting its release in October 2027, five long years after its predecessor graced our screens. Delaying “The Batman Part II” any further to accommodate a “Penguin” Season 2 would undoubtedly disappoint the legion of Robert Pattinson’s Batman admirers eagerly awaiting his return on the big screen.

At DC Studios, there’s been a bit of a conundrum with the character Batman. Matt Reeves’ franchise exists independently from the DC Universe. While he’s currently working on ‘The Batman Part II’, James Gunn, one of the co-heads at DC Studios, is supervising the creation of ‘The Brave and the Bold’, a Batman feature set within the DCU. Gunn believes an Elseworlds approach can be successful, and both films can coexist, but it would simplify matters if Reeves wraps up his Batman series sooner rather than later. Since Reeves intends to make a third Batman movie, it’s crucial to launch ‘The Batman Part II’ in the near future.

Luckily, that’s how things have unfolded. Reeves and his writing partner Mattson Tomlin wrapped up the script for The Batman Part II over the summer, and it’s now moving through pre-production. According to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, filming for The Batman 2 is set to begin in the spring, so there should be no more delays. It will be intriguing to discover if there’s scope (or a plot) for another season of The Penguin following the movie’s release. In case there isn’t, at least LeFranc and Reeves have left an indelible impression on television with a captivating limited series.
