At Gamescom, a multitude of updates about next year’s lineup of games were unveiled, and among the most eagerly awaited is the upcoming game, “Resident Evil Requiem“. Fans’ excitement didn’t wane as they were treated to a fresh trailer during Gamescom’s opening night event, which introduced Grace Ashcroft, the new protagonist, who is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft from “Resident Evil Outbreak”. The trailer focused solely on Grace and her mother, without any hints about any returning or new supporting characters. While the new information primarily focuses on what’s in store for the “RE” series, fans can’t help but wonder: Where is Leon Kennedy?
Is Leon in RE9 or What?
Despite Capcom not confirming Leon’s involvement in Resident Evil 9, a leaker known as Dusk Golem has assertively stated that Leon is expected to appear as a primary character, featuring extensively throughout the game and playing a significant role. Although leaks often carry an element of doubt, this suggestion has sparked considerable debate among fans about whether Leon will feature in Resident Evil’s upcoming installment within the series.
Requiem has been revealed so far. This is comparable to showing just the opening segment of RE8 during its unveiling, which includes Ethan’s house and the subsequent dark forest trail.

In June of 2025, Capcom unveiled the reveal trailer for the upcoming game, prominently featuring Grace Ashcroft as the protagonist and offering glimpses of a devastated Raccoon City – a nod to the classic setting with enhanced visuals. While this could simply be a tactic to stir up nostalgia in fans, die-hard Leon supporters speculate it’s a hint at his possible inclusion in the game. Regrettably, the Gamescom trailer did not provide any additional details about his potential appearance.
In the trailer unveiled at Gamescom, we see a flashback event, supposedly set in 2018, although the primary storyline of RE9 unfolds two decades later in 2038. According to Resident Evil’s established timeline, this would make Leon roughly 50 years old when RE9’s main narrative begins, which seems a bit advanced for a horror protagonist. However, Dusk Golem asserts that RE9 will mark Leon’s final appearance in the series.
In the movie “Resident Evil: Extinction,” Leon and Grace are the central characters. To clarify, both of them have significant roles, but it appears that this story might serve as a farewell for Leon, given his prominent position throughout the plot.

Although the Gamecom trailer for Resident Evil 9 didn’t show any signs of the gruff horror warrior, fans suspect that something is being kept secret. Initially, the trailer emphasized the Raccoon City police station, a setting familiar from Resident Evil 2, leading some to believe this could be a hint about the game’s protagonist. However, Capcom remains silent on whether Leon will appear in the near future. Regardless of the frustration it causes fans, this mystery fuels excitement and boosts the game’s overall popularity.
Capcom Keeping Mystery Alive Is Good for Resident Evil
If Leon Kennedy indeed joins the cast of Resident Evil 9, it’s shrewd of Capcom to keep silent about it. With his character revered online for various reasons and RE2 being a highly popular game, any title starring the beloved rookie cop is destined to attract buzz. By avoiding confirming or denying his presence in RE9, Capcom can leverage the free promotion generated by speculation. Fans who may not follow other installments of the series but adore Leon could be drawn back into the franchise, captivated by the chance of seeing their favorite character face more horrors again.
It’s indisputable that Leon Kennedy, who has made appearances both on-screen and through mentions, plays a pivotal role in the Resident Evil franchise. From his presence in RE2, RE4, and beyond, this resourceful cop is a recognized character of the series, with fans eagerly anticipating his return – even if it’s just to bid him farewell. Given that Resident Evil 9 won’t be released until February 26th, 2026, there’s plenty of time for fans to discuss and speculate in the meantime. It seems unlikely that Capcom will disclose any information soon, as they might prefer to save the announcement (if it happens) for a less news-filled period. Should Leon Kennedy appear in Resident Evil 9, the buildup and reveal will only intensify when the game is finally launched.
