Tom Sandoval is working on his showmanship.
During the August 19th episode of America’s Got Talent, Simon Cowell didn’t seem to enjoy Tom Sandoval & The Most Extras’ jazzy rendition of “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd. Interestingly, after Tom pressed his buzzer during the performance, Simon admitted he wasn’t aware that he had done so midway through the act.
In an interview on TikTok, posted August 20, he explained to Access Hollywood that there were some technical hiccups, but managed to deal with them as effectively as possible.
And after stepping offstage, Tom, 43, reflected on his own shortcomings during the number.
He went on to admit, “I acknowledge that I could’ve performed even better. I let some concerns about my movements and other aspects creep in, while I should have paid closer attention to my vocal delivery, given my inner-ear issues.
Throughout the show, the reality television personality expressed that problems with his ear monitors made it feel like he was performing in the dark while singing the song, but clarified that he wasn’t using this as an explanation for his less-than-perfect vocal performance. Subsequently, he mentioned that there were several factors he had to take into account when trying to impress the judges.
In his conversation with Access, he emphasized that it’s not just a regular contest, but an opportunity for them to stand out. He explained that instead of simply singing, they aim to engage the audience by adding elements like dancing, energizing the crowd, and being dynamic on stage. His intention was to go beyond just singing.
Previously, Tom demonstrated his talent during his debut on America’s Got Talent in June. His energetic rendition of “Take on Me” by A-ha earned him high accolades from judges Mel B and Howie Mandel. Interestingly, even Simon, known for his critical comments, had something positive to say about the audition.
At that point, he told me straightforwardly, “Your singing wasn’t outstanding, Tom.” But remember, not every performer on this stage aims for a recording contract. Often, it’s more about staying authentic to who you truly are.
The popular talent competition series “America’s Got Talent” airs every Tuesday at 8 p.m. on NBC. If you’re curious to learn more insider information about the show, continue reading below…
For season 20, contestants have a lengthy journey before they actually perform for the panel of judges consisting of Howie Mandel, Mel B, Sofía Vergara, and Simon Cowell. To make it as accessible as possible, NBCUniversal holds open call auditions virtually, allowing anyone to sign up for an audition with their casting team and producers. If a potential contestant impresses the team, they are then taken forward to be evaluated by executive producers. If approved, they progress to audition before the judges. The rest of the process unfolds from there. Contestants can choose to try out through either in-person or virtual open calls, or submit a video audition.
Embrace the importance of timing, my friends! As a lifestyle expert, I’d suggest setting your timers meticulously for those open calls. The guidelines indicate that you’ll have approximately 90 seconds to impress the producers with your remarkable talents. However, keep in mind that the regulations allow them to adjust audition times if necessary. So, let’s ensure we make every second count!
Indeed, several items are restricted. For example, during open call auditions, open flames and special rigging are not permitted. If a performance involves an animal, competitors must complete an Animal Information Form and provide the animal’s vaccination record. Prohibited items also include coolers (unless for medical reasons), fireworks, weapons, sharp tools, mace/pepper spray, illegal substances, alcohol, and props that require fire or pyrotechnics.
Contestants who advance in the preliminary rounds of America’s Got Talent can expect help with travel and accommodation costs for the judges’ round. If they need to fly, they will be given a plane ticket; if it’s a nearby location, they might receive bus, train tickets or gas money to cover their transportation expenses. Additionally, contestants are offered hotel stays and a daily stipend for food or other needs during this phase of the competition.
As a dedicated follower, I’d like to share that, in line with the rules for America’s Got Talent auditions, the show doesn’t offer hair and makeup assistance during the judges’ round. Instead, it’s up to us, the contestants, to arrive “camera-ready.” However, rest assured, these services are provided for later rounds.
Intriguingly, Tonia Green, our esteemed makeup artist, shared on Instagram that they worked with numerous contestants during season 19, indicating a significant effort and dedication from the team even at the early stages of the competition.
During rehearsals, contestants get a chance to practice their acts. But there’s more to it than just that. As Sofie Dossi, who competed on multiple seasons of America’s Got Talent, explained in a 2024 YouTube video, they also participate in what’s known as a ‘results rehearsal’. This is to ensure everyone knows their place if they’re eliminated or if they advance, and for the crew to sort out lighting and camera positions.
Instead of receiving the entire $1 million prize for winning America’s Got Talent all at once, winners have the option to receive it as an annuity over a period of 40 years. This means they could potentially get approximately $25,000 per year (before taxes) spread out across four decades.
