The scripted true crime series, titled “Smoke“, starring Taron Egerton, recently delivered an unexpected arson plot twist. However, one might wonder where this Apple TV+ production is heading following this shocking revelation.
On Friday, June 27th, the series titled “Smoke” debuted, presenting us with a detective, portrayed by Jurnee Smollett, who teamed up with an arson investigator, Egerton. Together, they endeavored to halt two serial arsonists causing chaos in the Pacific Northwest. The show swiftly introduced one of the arsonists (Ntare Mwine), but the identity of the second one was a puzzle – until that surprising revelation.
For those who were surprised, it turns out that Egerton’s character Dave was actually involved in the crime. John Leguizamo and Anna Chlumsky explained to Us Weekly how this revelation advances the plot, drawing inspiration from the arsonist exploits of John Leonard Orr.
64-year-old Leguizamo commented on John, the notorious arsonist from the ’90s. He was referred to as an expert in fire investigations, but it turned out that his expertise stemmed from the fact that he himself started the fires, resulting in numerous deaths and destruction of properties worth millions. His reign of terror would have continued if he hadn’t been caught.
Leguizamo credited creator Dennis Lehane for elevating the story.
He went on to say that the story was captivating, but Dennis took it to another level by using it as a starting point. However, what he’s done with it is even more thrilling and intriguing. He creates these intricate characters and adds them to the narrative, making it all the more enjoyable.

The TV series “Smoke” features both Rafe Spall and Greg Kinnear, drawing inspiration from the “Firebug” podcast. This show follows the story of a notorious California arsonist, who was once a fire captain and investigator, known as Orr. Convicted of serial arson and four counts of murder, Orr is believed to have started close to 2,000 fires over a 30-year period, making him the most prolific serial arsonist in American history. Despite his insistence on his innocence, he reached a plea agreement that granted him parole in 2002.
In the show, smoke often served as a backdrop for numerous scenes. As stated by Leguizamo and Chlumsky (age 44), working on the crime drama heightened their understanding of the risks associated with fire.
In his recollection, when he performed a scene for the show, they used a real fire. He admitted feeling fearful, as it was incredibly scary. The intensity of the heat – it can burn you even from a distance of 10 feet, which instills a profound respect for fire in him.
Meanwhile, Chlumsky molded her character using personal anecdotes, stating, “Growing up, my father was a chef, so I spent much of my time in a restaurant kitchen. I’ve had my fair share of burns, but for me, it’s not just about the tool; it’s about the tool and educating your children on its use.
She added: “However, while it’s genuine, it’s still computer-generated imagery. It doesn’t hurt anyone. Because of this, I find it less appealing. I become more wary of it instead.
The costars also developed a renewed interest in fire safety.
They bought a small fire-extinguishing blanket, it increased their respect for fire, and now they are more suspicious whenever they see a fire on the news.)
New episodes of Smoke are released Fridays on Apple TV+.
