Ewan McGregor Was Great As Black Mask In Birds Of Prey, But It Turns Out A Different Batman Villain Was Supposed To Antagonize Harley Quinn And The Gang

In 2016, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn made her first appearance in “Suicide Squad.” Since then, her role in the DC Universe hasn’t been fully revealed, but she came back four years later for “Birds of Prey.” This time, she was joined by characters like Huntress, Black Canary, and Cassandra Cain. The story involved them confronting Gotham City’s crime boss Roman Sionis, better known as Black Mask, who I found Ewan McGregor delivered a fantastic (and occasionally humorous) portrayal of. Interestingly, the original plan was for Harley and her friends to face off against a different, more well-known Batman adversary: Oswald Cobblepot, famously known as The Penguin.

In simpler terms, Robbie, who is set to star alongside Colin Farrell in the upcoming movie “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” in 2025, personally shared this information. It’s important to note that Farrell portrayed The Penguin in “The Batman”, released in 2022, and reprised the role for a HBO miniseries last year, earning him an Emmy nomination for next month. The character of The Penguin was featured in “The Batman”, which is why he couldn’t be used in “Birds of Prey”, as Robbie remembered.

Initially, Christina Hodson wrote a script for Birds of Prey where the antagonist was the Penguin. However, Matt Reeves requested that they didn’t use him as he planned on utilizing the character in another project. Instead, they changed it to Black Mask, who was portrayed by Ewan McGregor.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Margot Robbie mentioned to Colin Farrell that Christina Hodson did an outstanding job writing the character Penguin in “Birds of Prey.” This came as a surprise to Farrell, who asked for more details. Robbie praised the take on the character but didn’t reveal any specifics. However, she offered to send Farrell a copy of the earlier script she still had, making him one of the privileged few to glimpse what could have been in the DC Extended Universe.

In a different scenario, Birds of Prey could have seamlessly used The Penguin, as at one point, The Batman was intended to focus on Ben Affleck’s portrayal of the Caped Crusader, following his roles in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League. This version of The Batman would have had Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke as the primary antagonist, leaving Birds of Prey to employ The Penguin without any complications.

The original plan for the Batman project changed dramatically when Affleck left and Matt Reeves took over to reboot the series. As a result, Penguin was replaced by Black Mask in the film “Birds of Prey.” Although it would have been interesting to see how Oswald Cobblepot (Penguin) might have been portrayed in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), I think the switch made sense given that we ended up with Ewan McGregor’s Black Mask instead. The character fit well within the movie directed by Cathy Yan, and having another Batman villain introduced in a live-action film was a bonus since Penguin had already been played by Danny DeVito in “Batman Returns.

Watch “Birds of Prey” on HBO Max if you’re keen on reminiscing about the escapades of McGregor’s Black Mask right now. Beginning September 19, join Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell in “A Grand Adventure.” Keep an eye out for Colin Farrell reprising his role as The Penguin when “The Batman: Part II” hits the screens on October 1, 2027.
