Despite earlier plans for a second season, Showtime and Paramount have surprisingly decided to halt production on the latest Dexter series. The Dexter franchise has been one of Paramount’s most lucrative properties, maintaining popularity for nearly two decades. Even during its less successful periods, fans remained engaged with the show. Originally concluding in 2013, the character of Dexter Morgan resurfaced in 2021 for a spin-off titled Dexter: New Blood. Intended to be Michael C. Hall’s final portrayal of the character, new developments saw the franchise continue with a prequel called Dexter: Original Sin, and fan demand led to another spin-off series featuring Hall, titled Resurrection.
In addition to potential Dexter spin-offs, such as a prequel series about the Trinity Killer, there have been plans to emulate the formula used in Paramount’s Yellowstone. However, it seems these plans may be unraveling. Although Dexter: Original Sin was greenlit for a second season earlier this year, Variety reports that the show has now been cancelled altogether. Instead, Paramount is focusing their attention on Dexter: Resurrection, with plans to convene a writer’s room soon. While a renewal for Dexter: Resurrection isn’t guaranteed, the show has garnered positive critical reception and attracted large audiences, suggesting it may have a promising future ahead.
