This installment continues from where Mortal Kombat (2021) left off, with MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan) joining forces to protect Earthrealm against Outworld’s invasion in the upcoming tournament. In Mortal Kombat 2, renowned action star Johnny Cage (Karl Urban) joins the fight for Earthrealm, summoning his extensive martial arts abilities as the tournament unfolds to halt Outworld from overtaking Earthrealm.
In the trailer for Mortal Kombat 2, fans can anticipate a thrilling sequel packed with intense, eye-catching, and lethal martial arts combat – just as they’ve come to expect from the Mortal Kombat universe. One particularly intriguing aspect is the rekindling of the age-old rivalry between Scorpion (played by Hiroyuki Sanada) and Bi-Han (portrayed by Joe Taslim), who delivered spectacular fight scenes in the previous Mortal Kombat movie. 5) Johnny Cage vs. Kitana
In Mortal Kombat 2, the prominent action star finds himself embarking on an exhilarating journey as he enters the tournament that determines the survival of the realms. Notably, one of his anticipated battles involves a clash between Johnny Cage and Princess Kitana, played by Adeline Rudolph.
In 2021’s “Mortal Kombat,” Kitana was missing in action. However, her return to the spotlight in “Mortal Kombat II” is packed with her renowned martial arts skills and her famous fan-wielding attacks that caught Johnny Cage off guard. Given that Kitana usually represents Outworld but fights for Earthrealm, this encounter could be a friendly sparring match between the two. On the other hand, it might mirror Kitana’s storyline in the “Mortal Kombat: Legacy” web-series where she initially fought for Shao Kahn and later switched sides to join Earthrealm. 4) Johnny Cage vs. Baraka
In the Mortal Kombat series, Johnny Cage’s battle with Kitana leaves their allegiance unclear regarding the Earthrealm-Outworld struggle. However, there is no question about Baraka (played by CJ Bloomfield) in his clash with Johnny, evident from the trailer of Mortal Kombat II. Despite his potential, Baraka has often been underused as a character in various adaptations of Mortal Kombat, appearing for a short time as a comical antagonist opposite Liu Kang in the disappointing 1997 film, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.
Later, Baraka gained significant attention in the 2010 experimental short film titled “Mortal Kombat: Rebirth,” portrayed by Lateef Crowder dos Santos who beheaded Matt Mullins’s character Johnny Cage. However, Baraka took a more secondary role in the following “Mortal Kombat: Legacy” series. With Mortal Kombat II, there’s an opportunity for Johnny Cage to seek revenge against his adversary, Baraka, who wields arm blades.
3) Jade vs. Kitana
In the much-anticipated movie “Mortal Kombat II,” Kitana reappears on the big screen. However, Johnny Cage isn’t her sole competitor in the tournament for the realms. Instead, Jade, who uses a bo-staff, portrayed by Tati Gabrielle, joins the fray to challenge Kitana.
Jade, a character from the Mortal Kombat games, has made fewer appearances outside the series compared to Baraka. So far, her only live-action portrayal occurred in the 1997 film Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, where she was played by Irina Pantaeva. Later, Jade appeared in the 2021 animated movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, voiced by Emily O’Brien. Given her canonical friendship with Kitana in the Mortal Kombat universe and their anticipated confrontation in the tournament hinted in the previews for Mortal Kombat II, it will be intriguing to see how this relationship unfolds in the storyline.
2) Liu Kang vs. Shao Kahn
In the latest Mortal Kombat films, the traditional main character and leader of Earthrealm’s warriors, Liu Kang, played by Ludi Lin, has taken a more supportive role. However, his portrayal has effectively embodied the concentrated spirit of the warrior, as evidenced in the trailer for Mortal Kombat II. It offers a brief yet thrilling sneak peek at a battle between Liu Kang and the brutal ruler of Outworld, Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford).
The short clip displays Liu Kang launching a fireball attack against the harsh, dominant conqueror, and although trailers and marketing for Mortal Kombat II have primarily focused on Shao Kahn’s limited appearance, the suggestion of a fight between Liu Kang and Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat II is undeniably one of the most thrilling matchups in the sequel.
1) Kung Lao vs. Shao Kahn
In Mortal Kombat II, Liu Kang isn’t the sole Earthrealm warrior squaring off against Shao Kahn. The trailer additionally reveals his Shaolin brother Kung Lao (Max Huang) engaging in combat with the ruthless Outworld warlord. Kung Lao played a crucial role in forming the alliance of fighters to safeguard Earthrealm, but he was fatally slain and had his spirit stolen by Shang Tsung, the malevolent sorcerer from Outworld (portrayed by Chin Han) in the 2021 version of Mortal Kombat.
Liu Kang’s avenging of Kung Lao’s death was a major blow for many “Mortal Kombat” fans, yet it added to the anticipation when he resurfaced for the competition in “Mortal Kombat II”. What made this even more thrilling was the hints of Kung Lao’s fight in the trailer for “Mortal Kombat II”, where his signature razor hat could be seen in action.
