In the opening episode of Season 2 for “Peacemaker,” titled “The Ties That Grind,” Christopher Smith encounters a gateway leading to an alternate universe where everything about his life seems flawless. One striking contrast in this new world is that Chris’ brother Keith, who he unintentionally killed as children (as depicted in Season 1 of “Peacemaker”), is alive and thriving. Instead of the tragic past the original Chris knows, the brothers team up with their father Auggie to combat crime as a superhero trio called the Top Trio. This presents quite a shock for the main DC Universe’s Christopher Smith, as he gets to enjoy a positive relationship with his father and brother for the first time. In this alternate reality, it is revealed that Keith is a superhero, but viewers may be unaware that his costume persona is a lesser-known character from DC Comics.
During an interview with ComicBook about his part in Peacemaker Season 2, actor David Denman revealed that his character’s superhero alias is Captain Triumph. Unlike the comics, where Captain Triumph has a rich history, James Gunn didn’t draw upon this when creating Captain Triumph for the show.
Denman stated that Captain Triumph is an incredibly ancient character, ‘That fellow… he was twins, and one brother passes away. His spirit transfers into the other brother, making him Captain Triumph.’ Denman also shared that he inquired about this backstory from Gunn, to which Gunn replied, ‘No, it’s a completely new character.’ Furthermore, Gunn contemplated not using the Captain Triumph name to avoid confusing longtime fans.
James Gunn’s History With Obscure Comic Book Characters
During his tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gunn demonstrated an ability to transform lesser-known comic book characters into beloved household names. At first, the Guardians of the Galaxy were not well known among casual viewers, but their trilogy became one of the MCU’s most successful franchises. Gunn continued this approach when he moved to DC Entertainment. In “The Suicide Squad,” previously lesser-known characters like Polka Dot Man and King Shark were given substantial roles. Even in “Superman,” featuring a pop culture icon, Mister Terrific captured audiences’ hearts.
The character Peacemaker aligns perfectly with Gunn’s style, featuring an assortment of unique characters such as Chris Smith, Vigilante, and Judomaster. Introducing lesser-known heroes to the limelight is enticing for several reasons. Primarily, it provides a pleasant deviation from the continuous adaptation of top-tier superheroes who have already graced the silver screen. Moreover, Gunn’s ability to breathe new life into these lesser-known characters allows him creative flexibility due to their relatively unknown status. Compared to iconic figures like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, characters such as Captain Triumph carry less preconceived notions and expectations, making them more adaptable for Gunn’s distinctive touch.
So far in “Peacemaker” Season 2, only one episode has been released, but there’s potential for Captain Triumph, portrayed by Keith, to become another hit for director Gunn. The episode titled “The Ties That Grind” suggests a strong bond between Keith and his brother, implying that their relationship will play a significant role in the emotional heart of Season 2. Early reviews of “Peacemaker” Season 2 have praised its unexpectedly moving narrative, so it’s intriguing to see how the dynamic between Keith and Chris will develop, given that Chris is grappling with a new reality.
It’s uncertain if Captain Triumph will continue in the DC Universe, but Denman expressed interest in meeting Superman (Kal-El) should the chance arise. He shared his admiration for Superman, praising James’ portrayal as “phenomenal.” As for Gunn’s Superman Saga, he’s currently deciding on its direction and has already mapped out his next DC film project. Perhaps there could be a part for Keith Smith if he ventures into the DCU from another dimension.
