It’s no surprise that Marvel Studios had grand plans for the film “Eternals” before its release, but fans have recently uncovered more details on potential developments. Actor Kumail Nanjiani, who played Kingo in the movie, has disclosed the extensive terms of his contract, hinting at future movie roles, a possible video game character, and even a theme park ride. On the podcast “Working It Out”, Nanjiani shared with host and comedian Mike Birbiglia that he is currently crafting stand-up comedy material based on his experiences working on “Eternals”. He explained that this project ultimately inspired him to seek therapy and reconsider his approach towards work.
In a major film released post-COVID, I starred. While the movie received negative reviews and didn’t perform as expected, its disappointing outcome left such an impact on me that I decided to seek therapy for self-reflection.

Kumail Nanjiani didn’t need much encouragement before he openly stated, “The film is titled Eternals. It’s a major Marvel production. When I was offered the role, I thought, ‘This could be my career for the next decade.’ I agreed to appear in six movies. I even signed up for a video game and a theme park ride. They have you sign contracts for all sorts of things. So, you think, ‘The next ten years of my life will be spent making Marvel movies annually, with occasional personal projects in between.’ But none of that turned out to be the case.
What Was the Plan for Eternals?
Fans might engage in a lot of guesswork given that Nanjiani anticipated being part of six Marvel Cinematic Universe films within a decade, but it would still just be speculation. It’s plausible that at the time, Marvel had a plan for the next few appearances and ways to incorporate them into the MCU. However, it’s equally possible that they secured as many movies as feasible from the outset to prevent renegotiating contracts later on. Keeping in mind that it can be costly for Marvel to retain its top stars when their contracts expire, as evident with Robert Downey Jr., these precautions might have been taken.
The film “Eternals” proved to be a financial triumph, despite the challenging circumstances of its launch during the COVID-19 pandemic, which left many cinemas struggling to recover. However, it was not the box office performance alone that caused trouble for “Eternals.” In reality, the movie’s mixed reception from both fans and critics ultimately led Marvel Studios to phase out the team. Critics argued that the movie introduced too many new concepts all at once, in contrast to the gradual build-up towards the Avengers crossovers seen previously. Nonetheless, the film earned accolades for its direction and performances, even claiming several prestigious awards.
