In a fresh start for Peter Parker’s journey within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as depicted in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” we find our hero taking a new path. Following the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” where Doctor Strange casts a spell that erases Spider-Man’s existence from people’s memories, even those close to him like Ned Leeds and MJ. Contemplating whether to involve them again due to the perilous nature of his life, Peter recognizes that exposing them could lead to grave harm. With no other choice, Spider-Man opts to forge a new path by creating a new suit and resuming his role as a protector, dedicating himself once more to helping those in need.
After several years, Spider-Man is back in action, and it seems like he’ll slide right back into things when the series “Brand New Day” starts. Since he’ll be working alongside two Marvel Cinematic Universe veterans, Hulk and Punisher, it’s clear that he won’t miss a beat. However, one of these characters has been featured in multiple Marvel Studios films, and the new series might unintentionally rehash old traumas they’ve already overcome.
MCU Villains Love to Use the Hulk for Their Own Gain
Bruce Banner’s other self poses quite a challenge, to say the least. When Banner loses his grip, he can’t predict the outcome – sometimes he wakes up and an entire city is in chaos. Over time, he learns to manage his fits of rage, deliberately getting angry only when it’s strategically advantageous. However, Bruce fails to anticipate that villains consider the Hulk a weapon they can exploit, using him to carry out their dirty work while they focus on other tasks. This manipulation first becomes apparent in “The Avengers“, where Loki, aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier after being captured in Germany, devises a plan to release the Hulk as a diversion, allowing him to steal the Tesseract undetected.
In the ensuing years, Banner becomes an integral part of the Avengers team, aiding in the dismantling of HYDRA’s residual forces. However, this villainous group has a surprise up its sleeve – they unleash Wanda Maximoff, who possesses the ability to manipulate minds. In a chilling move against Stark, she makes him see terrifying nightmares, but it is the Hulk who suffers most, being driven into a frenzy and wreaking havoc on parts of Johannesburg. Following the battle’s end, Banner is left shaken by the destruction he caused. Thankfully, this ordeal marks the last time he encounters such an incident, but another Hulk does not escape unscathed.
In “Captain America: Brave New World,” Samuel Sterns, known as the Leader, recognizes the destructive potential of the Hulk and covertly transforms President Thaddeus Ross into the Red Hulk instead. Unfortunately, his initial complete transformation occurs at a critical moment, leading Sam Wilson to communicate with the beast, preventing it from causing widespread destruction in DC. The future implications for Banner during “Brand New Day” are unclear, but they could potentially resemble the situation Ross faced.
A Villain Is Probably Going to Pull the Hulk’s Strings in Spider-Man: Brand New Day
The speculations about Hulk joining “ Brand New Day” indeed proved correct, implying that stories about him becoming a villain could also materialize. It’s unexpected for Banner, in his intelligent Hulk form, to switch sides and use his powers for malicious purposes. A more probable situation is that a villain like Scorpion, who has been confirmed to feature, devises a plan to split the green beast from Banner, leading him on a destructive rampage through New York City. Spider-Man will need to utilize all his resources to quell the danger, and luckily, he has numerous past encounters to learn from.
As a fan, I’ve noticed that Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America have each had their turns subduing the Hulk. It makes me wonder if Spider-Man might find himself joining that list without much trouble. However, it seems like “Brand New Day” is adding an unexpected twist that could potentially change everything, which I’m excited about. For now, though, it appears they’re drawing from the well of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to ensure they don’t take any unnecessary risks.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
