In these moments, their authenticity radiates, offering insights into who they really are. This understanding can be particularly illuminating, even if you’ve known the person for a long time. This kind of experience is reminiscent of Jeffrey Wright’s collaboration with Spike Lee on the drama Highest 2 Lowest.
Except for a voiceover part in “She’s Gotta Have It” on Netflix, Wright hadn’t collaborated with Lee before the 2025 movie production. However, during the press day for “Highest 2 Lowest” this month, I discovered that they weren’t complete strangers when it came to working together. In many aspects, the film “Highest Lowest” encapsulates Spike Lee’s signature directorial style, offering intense drama, an outstanding soundtrack, and a vivid portrayal of New York’s distinctive vibe. This remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic “High and Low,” delves into a gripping narrative where the protagonist, played by Denzel Washington, finds himself in a moral dilemma. Initially thinking his own son has been kidnapped, he later discovers that it is instead the son of his trusted driver and confidant, Jeffrey Wright, who has been taken. With the fate of his business hanging in the balance and the security of his family at stake, Washington’s character is faced with a tough decision: whether to pay the ransom or not.
In a heartrending portrayal of a father on the brink, Jeffrey Wright gives an exceptional performance as he depends entirely on his friend and boss to save his son’s life. It’s evident that Wright and Spike Lee collaborated flawlessly during this project. While Lee has built a stellar reputation in the film industry since the mid-1980s, Wright leaves the set of ‘Highest Lowest’ with an even greater admiration for the director than before. Wright further expresses his sentiments, praising Lee and his work.
His true nature left a deep impression on me, surpassing even my highest hopes.
