In an attempt to persuade video game creator Hidetaka Miyazaki, movie director Alex Garland is said to have penned the screenplay for the Elden Ring film, spanning 160 pages. His effort seemed successful, judging by the outcome.
According to a recent article in The New Yorker, the live-action adaptation of an upcoming film was proposed to Noah Sacco, head of A24 films, directly by Garland. To gain support from Miyazaki, Garland wrote a script on spec (without a contract). This script spans 160 pages, along with an additional 40 pages of visual content. Subsequently, both Garland and Sacco traveled to Japan to finalize the deal with FromSoftware and Bandai Namco Entertainment.
Garland has already completed six plays of the game and is currently on his seventh playthrough, which gives us confidence that he’s well-versed in the game. Moreover, George R.R. Martin, who is renowned for his work, will serve as producer, expressing his excitement about A24 and Alex Garland’s directorial skills on his personal website. In addition to this, Martin played a significant role in creating the background story of Elden Ring, so his endorsement carries substantial weight.
As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled about the upcoming project, but details on the plot and cast are still under wraps. However, there have been unofficial whispers suggesting that Heartstopper’s Kit Connor might be stepping into a leading role. The fandom has been buzzing with exciting fancasts like Rebecca Ferguson as Marika, Lee Pace as Radagon, and Kiernan Shipka as Melina. I can hardly contain my excitement!
There’s currently no set date for when the Elden Ring movie will be released. If you’re interested, keep an eye out for upcoming video game adaptations and new PlayStation 5 games scheduled to launch in 2025 and beyond.
