Fan fiction, a widely appreciated form of storytelling, spans various genres and fandoms, with passionate fans penning down their unique narratives featuring beloved characters from books, movies, or TV shows. Often shared on forums, websites, or personal blogs, these fan-created tales sometimes transcend the virtual world and impact reality in unexpected ways. This fascinating scenario is at the heart of BOOM! Studios’ upcoming series, Mary Sue. Penned by Meghan Fitzmartin (Tim Drake: Robin) and illustrated by Lisa Sterle (Witchblood), this supernatural series promises to delve into an intriguing turn of events for a young fanfiction author. Mary Sue, being Fitzmartin’s initial self-owned comic, focuses on Cassie, a teenager passionate about writing fan fiction for her beloved television series. Interestingly, Cassie’s real life becomes quite intriguing as events from her stories seem to unfold in her reality.





Although Cassie’s mother may believe otherwise, she has a large number of friends; these friends, however, are primarily online companions with whom she can discuss her favorite television show, Riverview, and obtain feedback on her ongoing fan fiction work, featuring her unique character, Jessica, a captivating vampire.

However, when her old friend discovers her fictional character persona in school, it’s read aloud to the class. Cassie believes things couldn’t get any more embarrassing, but then her very own Mary Sue character springs from her fan fiction, not only adding to the humiliation, but also potentially making things even worse.



It’s intriguing to note that the character of Cassie appears to be exploring themes related to the “Mary Sue” character archetype in fiction. A Mary Sue is a kind of flawless character, often a young woman, who is excessively idealized and may serve as an author’s self-insert. However, it remains to be seen how exactly Cassie’s portrayal fits into this trope within the new series. From what we understand, it seems that Fitzmartin might be offering a fresh twist on the concept, as the character Jessica-a seemingly powerful hot vampire-seems to be causing more trouble than she resolves in the real world.

Mary Sue #1 hits stores October 1st. Final order cutoff for the title is September 1st.
