Dawn of Justice,” was less than favorable from both critics and fans. A change in direction away from Zack Snyder’s vision offered a short-term resolution, but by the time James Gunn arrived to create “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker,” the DCEU was struggling. However, fortunately for DC, the decision makers made a wise choice by giving full control to Gunn, who eagerly took on the challenge and turned things around.
Initially, the aim was to revitalize what is arguably DC’s most crucial superhero, Superman. Yet, Gunn didn’t want to miss out on introducing new heroes, so he added Hawkgirl and Mister Terrific into his latest superhero production. However, the character that held significant significance for Gunn was Guy Gardner, one of Earth’s Green Lanterns. This inclusion allowed Gunn to rectify a mistake from Ryan Reynolds’ film in 2011.
Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern Movie Didn’t Let the Power Ring Shine
In contrast to Superman, whose backstory is not initially explored, Green Lantern delves into Hal Jordan’s origin tale. As a swaggering test pilot who fancies himself superior, Hal’s life undergoes a dramatic change when he’s selected by a power ring to replace Abin Sur, the deceased Green Lantern who fought Parallax. His next destination is Oa, home of the Guardians of the Universe, where he learns the responsibilities that come with being a Green Lantern. Kilowog and Sinestro provide him with basic training on using his new equipment, although they don’t demonstrate much physical prowess, as the items created are ordinary objects commonly found on Earth. Parallax makes an appearance shortly thereafter, leaving Hal little time to experiment with his new abilities. All he can manage is to conjure up a couple of fighter jets that rescue him from imminent doom.
The absence of a sequel for the Green Lantern character implies that Ryan Reynolds may not get another opportunity to construct objects with his power, which is likely for the better. Instead, Reynolds seems to be thriving at Marvel Studios, while James Gunn is steering the Green Lantern Corps into uncharted territory on the big screen. In the Superman film alone, Guy Gardner creates a sizable insult, a tool that drives a metal hammer into a kaiju’s eye, a muzzle to prevent the monster from consuming other Justice League members, and much more. Interestingly, Guy is only one of several significant Green Lantern characters expected to appear in the DCU.
The DCU Isn’t Going to Let the Green Lantern Name Get Stale
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled about DC Studios’ upcoming TV series titled “Lanterns”. In this exciting new show, Hal Jordan, our seasoned hero, takes on mentoring a promising newcomer, John Stewart. The plot thickens with a murder mystery that finds them spending significant time in an unexpected location – Nebraska.
Now, I’ve got to admit, Nebraska might not seem like the ideal training ground for superheroes. But fear not! Just like Superman before them, Hal and John are poised to take creative control of their story. Hailing from different worlds, they’ll bring distinct perspectives to Earth’s protection, which is a refreshing change compared to the 2011 movie where all Green Lanterns shared similarities, even down to their uniforms.
In essence, “Lanterns” promises to deliver an original tale filled with unique approaches and characters that stand out!
Introducing Guy into the Justice Squad significantly reduces the likelihood that he’ll share a uniform with Hal and John. This setup also allows for various Green Lanterns to play significant roles in the series concurrently. Although Hal might have seen his best days pass, there’s a good chance John could be part of the upcoming Justice League team, working alongside Superman and others. Guy may initially feel resentful towards another squad outshining the Justice Squad, but once he considers the alternative, he’ll likely come to terms with it.
Superman is available on digital.
