Known for needing no introduction, let’s talk about Kurt “Stubborn” instead. As the iconic actor shares, he was advised to switch his name in the early stages of his career, but being the determined individual he is, Ford refused. The upcoming Season 3 of Shrinking, available with an Apple TV+ subscription, will feature Ford’s resolute character. Throughout his career, Ford has been a straightforward man. However, when it came to maintaining his identity, he cleverly used a bit of deception to tactfully dodge the name change requirement. Here’s how he managed it.
Ford’s Origin Story Is Well Known, But Did You Know About His Name?
Harrison Ford, famously known as The Witness star, was born in Chicago in 1942. His Hollywood career began in the late 1960s when he signed with Columbia Pictures as a contract player during the waning days of the studio system. In an interview with Variety, Ford revealed that at the time, he was earning $150 per week and found it difficult to secure roles due to limited opportunities. Upon landing his first role in 1966’s Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round, a studio executive reportedly suggested that his name sounded overly sophisticated.
Ford relays what the exec said to him,
He informed me that my career prospects in the business were limited, which I found acceptable. However, he suggested I style my hair like Elvis Presley, an idea I chose not to follow through on.
Apart from that, he additionally proposed that Ford consider altering his name due to its ostentatious sound. However, Ford managed to handle the predicament gracefully by suggesting an absurd alternative instead.

Ford Suggested “Kurt Affair” As A Stage Name
In a 2017 conversation with GQ magazine, Ford shared that he had no intention of adopting a new name, whether pretentious or not. Instead, he creatively coined the name “Kurt Affair” as he found it unusually unappealing. Speaking about his chosen moniker to GQ, he explained…
It was just the stupidest name I could think of.
When queried about whether he would’ve altered the name if the studio appreciated it more than they did, Ford responded candidly: “If they valued the name more, would I have changed it? Straightforward answer – yes.
Oh, I was just kidding around. They were teasing me first, so I decided to play along.
It’s hard to picture one of the “Star Wars” stars having a name like “Kurt Affair.” Harrison Ford seems much more fitting as a star name. Although it may appear somewhat pompous, I don’t think it is excessively so. A name like Kurt Affair would be better suited for a professional wrestler or an adult film actor, but not for the man portraying Indiana Jones.
It’s hard to say for certain if a name change would have significantly impacted Hollywood’s trajectory for Ford, but what is clear is that he has been involved in some of the most iconic franchises ever created. Interestingly, Ford also ventured into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing as Thaddeus Ross/Red Skull in the upcoming movie “Captain America: Brave New World,” set for release in 2025.
Let’s once again give a nod to Harrison Ford for his steadfast beliefs about the proper demeanor an actor should have.
