Among the captivating upcoming projects from DC Studios is “Clayface,” set for release in September 2026. Classified as an R-rated horror film with a unique blend of body horror, it promises to demonstrate the diverse capabilities of comic book adaptations through its distinctive tone and cinematic approach. Despite standing on its own merits as a potentially riveting project, fans are eager to understand how “Clayface” will fit into the broader DC Universe (DCU). However, recent updates on “Clayface” seem to suggest that Matt Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga may not be incorporated into the DCU as initially hoped.
The DCU Brief’s X account shared a quick clip showing vehicles en route to the Clayface film set, located in the UK. Production on Clayface is about to begin. Interestingly, the Gotham police car featured has a distinct design compared to those used in The Batman, suggesting that this production may exist in a different continuity from The Batman. Take a look at the video below:

Clayface Will Take Viewers to the DCU’s Gotham City
The specifics about the storyline of the upcoming movie featuring Clayface are being kept secret at the moment. However, rumors indicate that it revolves around an actor on the brink who resorts to injecting himself with a transformative substance to become Clayface in order to maintain his standing in the entertainment world. Although some speculated that this film might be based in Los Angeles, this recent footage confirms that at least part of the movie unfolds in Gotham City. Writer Mike Flanagan revealed earlier this year that he drew inspiration for the script from the “Feat of Clay” episode of Batman: The Animated Series, where the character Matt Hagen, alias Clayface, worked for Imperial Pictures based in Gotham.
In a few years, The Brave and the Bold won’t be released yet, making Clayface the initial opportunity for moviegoers to witness Gotham City in the DC Universe on the big screen. It will be intriguing to watch how director James Watkins brings this iconic location to life and what unique elements he introduces to distinguish his Gotham from the one portrayed in the Batman Epic Crime Saga. The Gothams depicted in The Batman and The Penguin have a raw, grounded, realistic aesthetic. To offer a different perspective, maybe Clayface will reflect Gunn’s preference for exploring comic book aesthetics and presenting a more stylized version of the city.
In simpler terms, Clayface is often connected with Batman’s group of villains. It would be intriguing if the creators are planning to hint at Batman’s involvement in the DC Universe (DCU). They need to find a careful approach; revealing too much about Batman might overshadow Clayface’s story, while excluding him completely could leave viewers feeling let down. Whether Gunn decides to focus on Batman for the DCU is yet to be seen. The script for “The Brave and the Bold” is being developed currently, with no casting decisions made until the script is finalized. A brief appearance of a shadowy Batman (similar to what was seen in “Creature Commandos”) could be possible, but fans should not anticipate seeing the actor portraying DCU’s Batman in “Clayface.
As Clayface prepares to start filming, there might be updates about the movie coming soon. So far, only Thomas Rhys Harries has been officially confirmed as Clayface, but it’s rumored that Naomi Ackie from Mickey 17 could land the female lead role. When production begins, DC Studios may unveil the full cast and release a first-look image to avoid leaks and excite fans with a sneak peek of what’s to come.
