Warning: Spoilers for Peacemaker season 2 below!
In its second episode, Peacemaker Season 2 unveiled a significant twist about the DC multiverse, expanding on an established DC universe concept while also paving the way for numerous possibilities. As part of James Gunn’s ongoing DC Universe (DCU), Peacemaker Season 2 is adapting slightly to fit into the DCU. One notable change so far has been the replacement of the Justice League’s cameo in Season 1 with an appearance by the Justice Gang from Gunn’s Superman series in Season 2. This adjustment could be due to the convergence of different timelines and realities, as hinted by the developing storyline in Peacemaker Season 2.
The premiere episode of Season 2 for “Peacemaker” featured an intriguing encounter between Christopher Smith (played by John Cena) and a duplicate version of himself, leading to a fight where he had no choice but to take his life. This twin Peacemaker is central to the season’s narrative that delves deep into multiple realities. The second season of “Peacemaker” also introduces a significant shift in DC’s multiverse lore, as seen in the second episode titled “A Man Is Only as Good as His Bird”. In this episode, we learn more about the show’s multiverse gateway called the Quantum Unfolding Chamber.
Peacemaker Establishes That at Least 100 Realities Exist in the DCU Multiverse
In the epic battle at the start of season 2’s premiere, Peacemaker uncovers a groundbreaking secret: his adversary, another Christopher Smith, stemmed from an alternate dimension thanks to the Quantum Unfolding Chamber. Even more shockingly, there are multiple versions of him across these dimensions. This revelation suggests that the Quantum Unfolding Chamber is actually a gateway to 99 distinct universes, a fact that could drastically impact the storylines in season 2 and the broader scope of James Gunn’s DCU.
The creation of 100 parallel DC universes suggests that the multiverse and Elseworlds concepts are not just options at DC Studios, but could play a significantly larger role in DC’s cinematic and television future than James Gunn has suggested so far. Furthermore, the Quantum Unfolding Chamber potentially opening up to 99 other universes doesn’t necessarily mean that the number of alternate realities within the DC multiverse ends there. In fact, it may be just the beginning of an infinite number of Earths in the DC multiverse, with the Quantum Unfolding Chamber serving as a gateway to only 99 of them. This initial setup for the Elseworlds universe, along with Gunn’s DC Universe, provides a vast playground and offers substantial expansion on a key aspect of DC lore.
DC’s Multiverse Is Usually Centered Around 52 Alternate Universes
In the world of DC Comics, the title “Crisis on Infinite Earths” might lead one to believe there are infinite worlds in the DC Elseworlds. However, in most of their multiverse storytelling, DC Comics has frequently emphasized the number 52. This is because they’ve traditionally suggested that there are 52 distinct Earths within the multiverse as a whole. Each universe has been given its own numerical designation for identification purposes. For example, Earth-1 refers to the primary DC Comics continuity, Earth-2 represents the Golden Age of comics, and Earth-3 is inhabited by villainous versions of their heroes, and so on.
DC Comics acknowledged the significance of the number 52 in their multiverse by starting the New 52 continuity reboot in 2011, following the timeline reset from the storyline “Flashpoint”. Even though 52 parallel Earths is a considerable amount, it seems that Gunn’s vision for the DC Universe goes beyond this, as he intentionally expands the multiverse to include at least 100 Earths. This could imply that the upcoming season of “Peacemaker” may have a more significant impact on the future of the DC Universe than previously perceived.
Why the DCU Having 100 Parallel Universes Is Such a Big Deal
The primary focus of DC Studios right now is centered around the first three projects in Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker Season 2 within the DC Universe (DCU). However, it’s important to note that the DCU won’t be the only focus for DC Studios. Gunn has repeatedly stated that any DC movies or TV shows outside of the DCU will carry the Elseworlds label. Currently, Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise is the only active project fitting this description. Yet, with 99 Earths introduced in Peacemaker Season 2, there are still a considerable 98 other Earths yet to be explored within DC’s multiverse.
This implies that under the leadership of DC Studios, there’s a broad array of opportunities for various interpretations of DC characters, both heroes and villains. Moreover, the Elseworlds projects from DC Studios could offer an expansive platform for multiverse collisions and character interactions. The creation of numerous DC universes by Gunn, coexisting with the main DC Universe, expands possibilities to a wide range of adaptations, including the first animated or live-action renditions of the ongoing Absolute Universe, as well as crossovers similar to those seen in CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths and The Flash from 2023. Gunn’s decision to withhold the final three episodes of Peacemaker season 2 from the press, presumably due to significant spoilers about the DCU’s future, suggests that the Quantum Unfolding Chamber and the multiple doorways it opens in DC’s multiverse could play a more substantial role in DC’s cinematic future than initially anticipated. Gunn appears to have opted for a departure from tradition by expanding the multiverse from 52 universes to at least 100, but given the potential opportunities this presents, it might prove beneficial.
In case you’re looking for something fresh to watch, season 1 of the show “Peacemaker” can be streamed on HBO Max. And good news for fans, each new episode from season 2 of “Peacemaker” is dropped every Thursday exclusively on HBO Max.
