A Beloved MCU Hero Has Been Erased from History (Or Has He?)

Throughout the years, Thor has been one of Marvel’s most cherished superheroes, but it’s important to note that he was never consistently popular. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Thor became one of Marvel’s more compelling early characters due to Kirby’s affinity for integrating mythology into his comics. Over the past six decades, Thor has experienced blockbuster storylines; notable runs include Walt Simonson’s epic journey to Ragnarok and beyond, Dan Jurgens/John Romita Jr.’s revival of Kirby’s style, J. Michael Straczynski’s transformation of Thor back into Marvel’s leading warrior, and Jason Aaron’s creation of a new Thor. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe introducing Thor to the big screen, we are currently experiencing a golden age for this character. The latest addition to this golden era is the series Immortal Thor, which concluded with the demise of the God of Thunder.

In the thrilling new series, Mortal Thor #1, we find ourselves delving into a story that unfolds after the epic battle between Thor and the gods of Utgard, as well as the malevolent corporation, Roxxon. Previously hinted at throughout the tale, Thor’s demise was shocking in its finality, taking his character’s fate to unexpected depths. The world we see in this fresh start has erased all memory of Thor, with his history being rewritten. So, who is Sigurd Jarlson, our main protagonist? Is Thor truly gone or does he still exist somewhere?

Thor Has Been Completely Forgotten

To clarify Thor’s current situation, let’s retrace events from Immortal Thor #24-25. In Utgard, Thor fought against Utgard-Loki alongside Baldur and Skurge. After defeating the gods of Utgard, Loki appeared behind him, fatally striking Thor in issue #24. The next issue opened with Loki conversing with Utgard-Loki about the recent events. Enraged by Thor’s death, Skurge destroyed the Shadow Bridge to Utgard, which was interconnected with Asgard’s Rainbow Bridge. This destruction seemed to erase the bridge across time and space. The immediate consequence on Earth was Thor’s disappearance from an Avengers photo and his replacement by Beta Ray Bill. In the afterlife, Thor made a self-sacrifice similar to Odin’s, aiming to save the mortal world from impending disaster. Although it’s uncertain where the story will lead, it appears that Thor has given up his godly status, potentially altering reality itself. Despite being seemingly dead, Thor is not entirely gone yet. It is clear that Loki orchestrated these events, as he now serves as the God of Stories and has crafted a new narrative where Thor no longer exists in his original form.

The narrative concludes at issue 25 of “Immortal Thor”. Thor revives from his demise on Earth, but can’t recall his past as Thor; he now goes by Sigurd Jarlson. A friendlier mischievous character called Lucky hands Sigurd the keys to an apartment in the transition to “Mortal Thor” #1. With impending rent due, Sigurd seeks employment. He encounters a construction site where Roxxon Energy Corporation is recruiting non-union workers due to a strike. Sigurd recognizes ominous runes on some of Roxxon’s hired thugs and declines the offer, instigating a protest among others. The Roxxon representative dislikes Sigurd spoiling their plans to break the strike, so they send the thugs after him. Before the brawl, Sigurd inquires about the runes, learning that these men worship Thor, the god of strength, who is allegedly returning with a vengeance. They attack him, but his ordinary hammer proves effective against them, leaving no chance for the thugs against the muscular young man. He warns them to exercise caution when choosing whom they challenge and whom they work for, hinting that their desired angry Thor is now back in action.

Thor’s Story Has Never Begun… Yet It Starts All Over Again

Over time, we’ve encountered numerous tales featuring the mighty Thor. We’ve witnessed victories and defeats, even seen him perish on multiple occasions. However, in the comic series “Immortal Thor“, his death stands out unlike any other. True to form, Thor met his end, but this time, it was different – he sacrificed himself, setting himself up for what’s next. With this act, Thor has exited the narrative of Earth (or at least his role as the God of Thunder), but a new Thor remains, one who is revered by evil forces. Yet, the essence of Thor lives on, for he has always been present in some form. And now, he’s returned.

Remarkable Issue #1 of “Eternal Thor” Unveils a Story Still Two-Thirds Unfolded

The reasons behind the events remain unclear, but one thing is certain – there are many more mysteries to unravel. A question posed by “Eternal Thor” is, “Are you ready to discover more?” The unfolding events are enthralling, with much more yet to be revealed.
