The impending HBO series based on “Harry Potter” has sparked much discussion, yet there’s a question that lingers in the minds of both dedicated fans and casual viewers: “Why?” Indeed, the seven-book series about the young wizard has been one of the most impactful cultural phenomena of the 21st century. However, with the successful film adaptations still vivid in our memories, even Chris Columbus, director of the first two “Harry Potter” films, questioned its necessity on the podcast “The Rest is Entertainment.” Despite the expansive and intricate world of “Harry Potter,” Warner Brothers and HBO’s decision to reimagine the original books into a television series seems to reflect the risk-averse nature prevalent in the entertainment industry and the ease of capitalizing on a familiar cash cow.
A Harry Potter Series is Too Much, Too Soon
If there had been more time between adaptations or a significantly new approach to the HBO’s Harry Potter series, this debate might not exist. However, based on the casting announcements and sneak peeks from behind the scenes, it appears that the first novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, is being quite literally brought to life on screen. Just as the films were both box office hits and critically acclaimed during their decade-long run in theaters. Despite having exceptionally skilled creatives like Francesca Gardiner (from Succession) as the showrunner and Mark Mylod (from Game of Thrones) directing, without a markedly different interpretation of Harry’s story, it may prove challenging for the series to set itself apart from the films that have come before.

The core issue lies in the persisting popularity of the Harry Potter films and franchise within the public’s memory. The final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, was released as recently as 2011, and many of the main actors from the movies continue to work and maintain relevance in popular culture today. Additionally, the spin-off trilogy, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, ended just three years ago, and the play The Cursed Child is currently running in five major cities along with a North American tour. In essence, Harry Potter remains as prevalent as ever.
If Warner Brothers had waited another decade or so, a remake of Harry Potter might have been more warmly received instead of being met with skepticism. This situation is further exacerbated by the fact that we now live in an era where media is readily available through physical copies and streaming services. Essentially, Warner Brothers hasn’t given us enough time to forget about Harry Potter, making the idea of rediscovering him less exciting or necessary.
Instead of contrast, let’s say “On the other hand,” regarding the film “A Star is Born.” It has been remade thrice, but with a gap of twenty years between each version. This time lapse allowed for fresh perspectives on the timeless story and new leading talents to emerge. One notable aspect of the “Harry Potter” movies was blending established British actors with a captivating cohort of young performers. Although acclaimed stars such as John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, and Nick Frost joined the “Harry Potter” series cast, the new cast of actors failed to offer a unique or exhilarating contrast to the original group who have become iconic for their roles in Harry’s world.
One key element that HBO’s “Harry Potter” series should focus on and excel in is its unique format, which sets it apart. Unlike feature films that typically have limited time for storytelling (around two and a half hours), this series can span anywhere from six to ten hours per novel, offering a more expansive narrative. This extended format appears to be the main advantage of the series.
Additionally, it’s thrilling to consider that the supporting characters from the books will receive more screen time, allowing for deeper exploration of their stories. Given the high-caliber talent attached to the show, this promise is particularly enticing.
Unlike the Films, the Harry Potter Series Is Hounded by Controversy
It might have been wiser for Warner Brothers to delay the remake of the Harry Potter books, given the controversy surrounding the book’s author, J.K. Rowling, and her views on transgender individuals. Originally admired as the creator of the Wizarding World, Rowling has faced significant backlash and criticism over her opinions on this subject. If Warner Brothers aimed to capitalize on nostalgic millennial Harry Potter fans, it may not have been ideal to involve Rowling in the series’ production, since many dedicated followers of the franchise have distanced themselves from the creator due to their views. The actors chosen for the upcoming Harry Potter series are often asked to address Rowling’s stance on transgender people, and if Warner Brothers had kept a distance between the films and its author, this issue might not be as prominent.

Despite the Fantastic Beasts spinoff series appearing to lose momentum, owing partly to the contentious figures involved and partially because it drifted from Newt Scamander’s story, there is a rich tapestry of lore that could have been more appealing to Harry Potter enthusiasts. For instance, a prequel focusing on Harry’s parents, James Potter and Lily Evans, would not only offer a fresh perspective within the universe but also reintroduce popular characters like Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Severus Snape. Additionally, there has been extensive fan curiosity about the formation of Hogwarts School by its founders – Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. Perhaps using David Nutter’s expertise from Game of Thrones for such a prequel would have been a better use of his talents than simply retelling the same stories aimed at fans who eagerly watched the films in costume on their initial release.
In summary, the Harry Potter series faces a significant challenge in creating a film adaptation that does justice to the original books and offers novel insights, given that the movies’ impact is still quite substantial.
HBO’s Harry Potter series will debut in 2027.
