DC Just Revealed the Devastating Fate of Comics’ First Teen Super Team

DC Comics is intensifying their focus on Superman, given the success of the recent Superman movie and the acclaim it received for its faithful adaptation of the comics. This year, Superman serves as the core character in the main narrative of the DC Multiverse, with the “Legion of Darkseid” storyline offering an exciting action spectacle that ties into both Superman’s history and the Legion of Superheroes. The Legion of Superheroes is one of DC Comics’ most iconic teams, and although they have been somewhat sidelined since their last reboot in the late 2010s, “Legion of Darkseid” appears to be a means of bringing them back into the spotlight. In Superman #29, readers are brought up-to-date on the team’s current situation and its various iterations, hinting that things are not going smoothly for the team at present.

In a surprising turn of events, Superman, once at odds with Superboy-Prime, journeys into the future to reconnect with his old allies. However, upon arrival, he finds a disheartening sight – a ravaged 31st century, with evidence suggesting that the Legion of Darkseid had already wreaked havoc. Amidst the remnants of his fallen comrades, Superman makes his entrance in the final phases of the Legion War. Although there are still some survivors, it seems that the once powerful Legion of Superheroes – the pioneering teen superhero team – has been vanquished.

The Darkseid Legion Is Unstoppable

In a surprising turn of events for longtime DC fans, the Darkseid Legion made their debut in DC All-In #1. Unlike the original Legion of Superheroes, who were teenage aliens inspired by Superman’s time as Superboy, this Legion hails from a universe where Darkseid is the supreme being. As a result, their methods are far more ruthless than those of the original Legion, often having no qualms about destroying their foes.

The “Legion War”, as depicted in Superman #29, features the Darkseid Legion launching an attack on four different versions of the Legion of Superheroes. To avoid confusion, it’s worth noting that the Legion of Superheroes is a massive group of superpowered heroes, possessing abilities such as telepathy, lightning control, gravity control, magnetism, shapeshifting, super strength, invulnerability, size control, and shadow control, among others. They have always served as a formidable superhero force. The Darkseid Legion, however, were raised in a world where they follow the example of their overlord, Darkseid, who is not known for his reluctance to kill.

This summary might help clarify the differences between the two Legions for those unfamiliar with the Legion of Superheroes.

Over the years, DC Comics has been known for frequently rebooting the Legion of Super-Heroes’ continuity, causing turmoil in their history. Specifically, there have been four significant revisions of the Legion: the original pre-Crisis Legion (active until early ’90s and later resurrected in 2007, most recently seen in Justice Society of America #10-11 from 2024), the Reboot Legion (established in the ’90s), the Threeboot Legion (introduced in 2005), and the Bendis Legion, a new version penned by Brian Michael Bendis. In Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds, it was revealed that each of the first three versions of the Legion existed on separate Earths, which might suggest where the Bendis Legion fits. All four teams united against the Darkseid Legion, and with their combined strength of over a hundred members, they fought valiantly. However, the Darkseid Legion overwhelmingly defeated most of the heroes. A few survivors were left: all four Brainiac 5s, Dawnstar, Polar Boy, Gold Lantern, Kinetix, and Starman. The surviving Brainiacs captured the Darkseid Legion’s Brainiac, discovering that they hailed from another Earth – the Absolute Earth – enabling Darkseid to amass a formidable force capable of overpowering multiple versions of the team.

Can Superman Save the Legion?

Typically, the presence of Superman, especially accompanied by the mighty Superboy-Prime, would be cause for excitement among the Legion members. Yet, given their past encounters with the Darkseid Legion, they are well aware of the danger posed by them. In fact, the survivors warn Superman that his arrival in the future was a significant blunder; they believe the conflict served partially as a trap aimed at him. Nevertheless, they decide to join forces with Superman to assault the Time Institute, a place where the Darkseid Legion resides. Utilizing the time travel technology there, they plan to launch attacks up and down the timestream.

As a devoted fan, I’ve always admired Superman for being far more formidable than any Legion, given that he was instrumental in their training. But the recent emergence of “Darkseid’s Legion” changes the game entirely. They’ve managed to decimate four separate Legions, making them the deadliest iteration we’ve ever encountered. Even with Superman’s might, it seems there’s a high probability he won’t be able to save the day, especially since the shocking revelation at the end of the issue: Superman discovers he made a grievous error. The “Legion of Darkseid” has been an exhilarating rollercoaster ride so far, and it appears this thrilling journey is far from over.
