The story of The Mandalorian character will proceed in a replacement Season 4, but not all cast members from the Disney+ show will be back. Despite earlier plans for a fourth season with scripts penned by series creator Jon Favreau, Lucasfilm is changing directions. Instead, Pedro Pascal’s iconic role from The Mandalorian will next appear in a cinematic blockbuster titled The Mandalorian & Grogu, scheduled for release on May 22, 2026.
As a devoted fan of The Mandalorian, I was quite surprised to hear the latest news that Disney+ has decided to hold off on Season 4 altogether. Instead, it seems that the story will continue through theatrical sequels, provided the 2026 blockbuster lives up to expectations. Exciting times ahead, as we gear up for The Mandalorian and Grogu’s return, now accompanied by some heavyweight talent like Jeremy Allen White and Sigourney Weaver!
The shift from eight TV episodes to a two-hour film in The Mandalorian means that there’s less screen time available, resulting in fewer character appearances. Consequently, some significant characters from The Mandalorian are likely not to feature in the upcoming movie, which leaves their future roles up in the air.
The Mandalorian & Grogu Won’t Bring Back Some Major Disney+ Characters
Temuera Morrison – Boba Fett
Following varied responses to his Disney+ series, “The Book of Boba Fett,” star Temuera Morrison announced that he’s currently taking a break, meaning he won’t be appearing in “The Mandalorian & Grogu” for a while. This news is particularly disappointing as Morrision shared he was planning to reappear when Season 4 was being discussed.
It was initially thought that Boba Fett would have a significant role in the future stories, based on his appearances in “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett”. However, his future is now uncertain due to recent developments. After defeating Cad Bane and establishing control over the Pyke Syndicate, Boba Fetts status as the ruler of Tatooine has been solidified, and he is now respected by its inhabitants.
Ming-Na Wen – Fennec Shand
In a chat with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley, Ming-Na Wen revealed that she isn’t part of “The Mandalorian and Grogu” series at present but expresses her desire to reprise her role as Fennec Shand in future installments. Given her current role as Boba Fett’s right-hand woman, it’s understandable that she too will be absent from the upcoming Season 4.
Given that “The Book of Boba Fett” seems unlikely to have a second season at present, it remains uncertain where those characters might reappear next. A possible scenario could be a surprise cameo in “The Mandalorian with Grogu.” Since they could potentially feature in Dave Filoni’s MandoVerse crossover film, this seems like the most plausible option for now.
Gina Carano – Cara Dune
Gina Carano’s character Cara Dune was a frequent presence in the early seasons of “The Mandalorian,” but after she made controversial comments likening the current political environment to Nazi Germany, Lucasfilm decided to part ways with her from the show. They clarified that there are currently no plans for her to reappear on “The Mandalorian.
Prior to Gina Carano’s dismissal, Star Wars had grand plans for Dune, where her character, the New Republic officer, was set to spearhead the Rangers of the New Republic spin-off series. However, this project was eventually abandoned and eventually integrated into other MandoVerse episodes.

BONUS: Carl Weathers – Greef Karga
Sadly, actor Carl Weathers, who played Greef Karga in “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” passed away in February 2024, prior to the start of filming. Given this, it is likely that Karga won’t appear in the upcoming blockbuster. However, Lucasfilm has not yet confirmed his status, leaving a possibility open for the late “Rocky” actor to be replaced.
In the last season’s finale, Karga became the High Magistrate of Nevarro and gifted Din Djarin a cabin on the town’s outskirts for his use during his travels. This bond between them is strong and difficult to break, except perhaps if something were to happen to Karga off-screen.
BONUS: Giancarlo Esposito – Moff Gideon
In the third season of “The Mandalorian”, Giancarlo Esposito, famous for his role in “Breaking Bad”, took on the villainous role of Moff Gideon, a leader from the Empire’s remnants. His storyline came to a dramatic end in the finale when his ship crashed into a Mandalore base, causing a fiery explosion that suggests he may have perished.
To put it simply, if something doesn’t have a physical form, there can be no assurance about its return, and Esposito expressed his opinion that Moff Gideon is in hiding somewhere. However, as of now, there’s no indication that he’ll make an appearance any time soon.
In the absence of the usual five characters in “The Mandalorian & Grogu” for the upcoming movie in 2026, five different characters from the Disney+ series are expected to return instead.
