The upcoming comic book series, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” may rectify one of Marvel Studio’s most criticized decisions following “Avengers: Endgame.” With lofty expectations for Marvel Studios entering Phase 4 and the Multiverse Saga post-“Endgame,” which smashed box office records with a staggering $2.8 billion gross, the path ahead hasn’t been smooth. The increased production of content due to Disney+ series has led to concerns about quality, causing significant backlash.
The journey to the movie “Avengers: Doomsday” has been quite turbulent, filled with setbacks and missteps. However, it’s important to acknowledge that there have also been significant triumphs. One such example is “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which grossed over $1.9 billion and managed to succeed despite the ongoing pandemic. This multiverse film will be followed by a street-level sequel titled “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” in July 2026, marking a break in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s release schedule but also ending a disappointing trend with it.
In 2026, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is set to break an annoying trend in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by being the first genuine sequel following a Multiverse Saga film, specifically “No Way Home.” Unlike Phases 4, 5, and 6 which have seen sequels for Infinity Saga projects like “Doctor Strange,” “Black Panther,” and “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Spider-Man” will be the MCU’s first series of two movies within the Multiverse Saga.
Rather than directly producing follow-ups like traditional sequels in the Infinity Saga, Marvel Studios has opted for a unique approach by weaving interconnected stories featuring various characters. These tales are then expanded upon through standalone films and series, creating what some might call pseudo-sequels.
Since the release of Endgame, one of Marvel Studios’ noticeable shortcomings has been a failure to fully complete even their most cherished projects. This has resulted in numerous loose ends that seem unlikely to ever be tied up, and it also means that fans haven’t had enough time to develop strong emotional connections with the characters who will take the lead in Avengers 5.
Going back to the Infinity Saga, the franchises for Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America each featured three films, while Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy both had two. However, the Avengers series outshone them all, boasting an impressive count of four movies.
Following “Brand New Day,” it is anticipated that the next installment of the Multiverse Saga will be “Avengers: Secret Wars,” slated to premiere in theaters a year later, in December 2027. This release comes after the grand finale of Phase 6, titled “Doomsday,” which begins in December 2026.
It appears that Marvel Studios is reportedly setting things in motion for the sequels to “Black Panther 3” and “The Fantastic Four 2”, following the release of “Wakanda Forever” and “First Steps”. Additionally, there are whispers about a potential “Deadpool 4” after the success of “Deadpool & Wolverine”, although the studio is said to be taking things at a leisurely pace.
Although Marvel Studios might not be overly enthusiastic about other sequels, there’s a great deal of enthusiasm surrounding Spider-Man: A Fresh Start, which recently started filming in the U.K., with a scheduled release date of July 31, 2026 (assuming everything goes as planned).
Amid MCU Struggles, Spider-Man Reins Supreme
It can’t be disputed that following the release of “Avengers: Doomsday,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced challenges, as the influx of films and Disney+ series have left the studio stretched thin, making it difficult to dedicate sufficient time for sequels’ development.
Fortunately, it’s great news that Sony Pictures, the rights holder, seems keen to bring Spider-Man back to the big screen as soon as possible. This decision benefits Marvel Studios significantly, as Spider-Man is undeniably their most recognized character and has consistently delivered strong box office successes.
Between Spider-Man films “No Way Home” and “Brand New Day”, there’s going to be a five-year gap, which seems fitting given reports of the Marvel Cinematic Universe starting a fresh Spider-Man trilogy that will see Peter Parker transition into his post-high school adult life.
At the moment, it seems like only two movies – “Brand New Day” and “Secret Wars” – will serve as follow-ups to the Multiverse Saga, with no new saga beginning yet. However, there’s an unconfirmed release date slated for July 23, 2027, leading some fans to believe it might host another sequel, possibly “Doctor Strange 3” or “Shang-Chi 2”.
From where I stand, it remains to be seen exactly how Spider-Man will intertwine with future Avengers films, but there’s a strong anticipation that he’ll take center stage. Given the rich history shared by Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and Robert Downey Jr.’s iconic visage, potential emotional confrontations between him and Doctor Doom could leave us in tears.
