Despite the cancellation of its long-developed game, Everwild, developer Rare may have faced a setback. However, executive producer Louise O’Connor has been given expanded authority within the Xbox Game Studios division. According to VGC, O’Connor is now serving as the chief of staff for Xbox Game Studios as a whole.
Over a span of 25 years, O’Connor has been a long-time employee and industry veteran at Rare, a renowned game studio. Her initial stint with the company was during the development of the adult-comedy platformer game “Conker’s Bad Fur Day” for the Nintendo 64, a project she began back in 2001.
It’s worth noting that O’Connor has followed Craig Duncan, another ex-Rare employee, as they both hold leadership positions within different teams at Xbox Game Studios. This includes The Coalition, Halo Studios, Double Fine, Bethesda, and more, all under the Xbox Game Studios brand. This occurred in October 2024 when Duncan took over from Alan Hartman.
Recently, Rare’s most significant work-in-progress project, titled Everwild, was announced to have been terminated. This decision was made back in July, coinciding with broader layoffs across Microsoft. Besides the cancellation of the game, Rare itself faced restructuring, leading to further job losses within the studio.
Over the past decade, apart from the 2015 collection release “Rare Replay,” the significant game that Rare has put out is “Sea of Thieves” in 2018. Due to the cancellation of “Everwild” and other studio developments, Rare announced a new strategy for seasonal content updates in their multiplayer pirate game as recently as July.
As a passionate Sea of Thieves gamer, I’m excited about the upcoming changes in how our favorite pirate adventure gets its new content. Instead of being overwhelmed with all the new stuff at once, we can expect seasonal content to be rolled out gradually throughout each season, allowing us more time to enjoy and explore every detail.
And The Sea of Thieves Insider Programme is making a comeback, giving us, the community, an opportunity to get our hands on future game content before anyone else. We can test it out, provide feedback, and help shape the future of our pirate journey! Ahoy, mateys, it’s going to be a thrilling ride!
In the initial month of each new season of Sea of Thieves, fresh sandbox elements and a setup for the story’s continuation are introduced. This is followed by a main event during the second month that highlights the season. The third month focuses on encouraging players who may have taken a break to re-engage with the game, aiming to refresh the sandbox gameplay content.
In the opening month of Season 17 for Sea of Thieves, we’re embarking on uncharted territories since it’s the game’s first season under the new format. This exciting season introduces the Smuggler’s League, along with novel features such as smugglers’ hideouts, fresh loot types, and Smugglers’ Runs. Heists are a significant focus during this period.
Sea of Thieves is available on PC, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
