Jamie Lee Curtis Shares Princess Diana Letter She Got Before Her Death

Jamie Lee Curtis is sharing her unforgettable interaction with a late icon.

As a devoted admirer, I shared a heartfelt letter penned by Princess Diana that reached me following my missed encounter with her and her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, during their visit to the UK set of my 1997 film, “Fierce Creatures.

Jamie shared in a September 1 Instagram post that they were filming deep within Pinewood Forest. After a long stretch, they paused for a break. Jamie hopped onto a golf cart and rode the mile back to the dressing room area to use the restroom. The driver began knocking on the door, informing him that her sons had arrived. Excited, Jamie jumped back into the golf cart. By the time he returned, she was already walking away, so he didn’t chase after her to express his admiration personally.

The Oscar winner subsequently wrote a letter to Diana and had it delivered to Kensington Palace.

The following day, Jamie replied, expressing gratitude for his letter and acknowledging that, as with most people, she often finds herself answering nature’s call. She also shared her excitement about our upcoming meeting.

The letter took on an even greater sense of sadness when Jamie found out that Diana died two months later, on August 31, 1997, following injuries from a car accident in Paris with her companion Dodi al-Fayed. She was only 36 years old.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I recently found myself back on home soil after an enchanting journey across the pond in England. Upon settling in, I tuned into the evening news, only to momentarily catch a glimpse before turning it away. The haunting images of that particular tunnel replayed relentlessly, and I knew all too well the profound impact such repetitive footage can have.

Although Diana’s sudden death was a great loss for her personally, Jamie has had time to consider the extraordinary legacy she created as a member of the royal family.

The 66-year-old expressed, “I truly believed she mastered the art of living prudently.” Everyone recalls the powerful scene of her spreading her arms wide after being apart from her sons rushing towards her. She had an exceptional love for her sons, a love unparalleled among royals, and she had a profound affection for the world. In essence, she loved deeply.

Jamie expressed, “Though it be today or that day, I remain touched by her grace, courage, I am equally consoled knowing she led a thoughtful, insightful, loving existence.

Princess Diana boldly championed issues that were once deemed unsuitable for royal discussion, such as AIDS research, land mine clearance, and homelessness in the U.K. She was among the pioneers who were captured on camera showing compassion towards AIDS patients-a move that played a significant role in reducing stigma and alleviating public fear associated with the condition.

In essence, Princess Diana’s unfortunate demise served as a catalyst for the royal family and media to establish a closer relationship than ever before. Following her death, the palace negotiated with British press to prevent photographers from overstepping boundaries in response to the public’s curiosity. This led to an increase in palace-arranged photo opportunities and improved collaboration between the two parties regarding the delicate balance of privacy and public figure representation.

It could be said that Diana’s unique impact on the royal family stemmed from her exceptional openness about facing public criticism. She candidly shared her battles with mental health, such as experiencing postpartum depression after welcoming Prince William into the world. In a groundbreaking interview with Martin Bashir for the BBC, she commented, “Perhaps I was the first one in this family to experience depression or openly shed tears. And given that it’s something I hadn’t seen before, it made me wonder how one could offer support?

Many years after, William and Harry continue honoring their mother’s memory by initiating Heads Together, an endeavor aimed at transforming the dialogue in the United Kingdom regarding mental health and overall well-being.

The princess left a mark on life beyond palace walls by having unusually casual relationships with the royal staff. Her well-known friendship with butler Paul Burrell grabbed newspaper headlines, and it’s said she arranged play dates for Princes William and Harry with the children of her staff. Princess Diana may have influenced Kate Middleton’s decision to frequently cook meals at home by involving her own sons in the kitchen as well.

In a departure from traditional royal childbirth practices, Princess Diana chose to give birth to her children, including Prince William, outside Buckingham Palace – a place where Prince Charles was born years prior. This made Prince William the first prospective British monarch to be born in a hospital on June 21, 1982. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge continued this trend, welcoming their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, at the same London medical center, St. Mary’s Hospital.

Instead of treating her sons like they were above everyone else, as many people had already done, Princess Diana worked hard to make life feel ordinary for William and Harry. Her youngest son shared in an interview that she decided to give them a regular life despite the challenges of growing up under the spotlight. This meant occasionally taking them out for burgers, sneaking them into movie theaters, or driving through the countryside with the roof down in her old BMW while listening to Enya.

During their official tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1983, Diana, alongside Prince Charles, decided to bring along their infant son, Wills (who was only ten months old at the time), as they traveled. Usually, royal children did not accompany their parents on such trips. However, Diana’s choice to keep her family united is believed to be the reason why Prince George and Princess Charlotte are now frequently included in overseas journeys today.
