Wednesday Season 3 Updates: Release Window, Story Setup & Everything We Know

In its third season, the popular show “Wednesday” on Netflix will have some significant questions to address upon its return. After the shocking revelations in Season 2, this Jenna Ortega-led adaptation of the Addams Family aired its second installment on Netflix in 2025, following a break of almost three years. Despite the long wait, it delivered enough unexpected developments and turns to make the delay worthwhile. The characters’ sophomore year at Nevermore Academy was as dark and perilous as the first, with even more secrets waiting to be exposed.

Note: This text contains SPOILERS for both parts of Wednesday Season 2.

In its second season, the series unraveled additional mysteries, such as backstories for various Addams family members. This encompassed hints regarding Aunt Ophelia of Wednesday, the charming introduction of Grandmama Frump (portrayed by Joanna Lumley), and even the disclosure of Thing’s origin. It touched upon many aspects, but there are still numerous secrets to unveil in a potential third season. It’s worth noting that Wednesday Season 3 has already been commissioned by Netflix, which comes as no surprise since it is one of their most-watched shows. Here’s a sneak peek at what awaits us when the show resumes, and an estimation of its possible return date.

Wednesday Season 3’s “Ideal” Release Window & How Many Episodes It’ll Have

The release date for Season 3 of “Wednesday” has not been announced yet, which could make fans feel apprehensive, and rightfully so. It’s become common for popular streaming TV shows like “Stranger Things” and “Squid Game,” also on Netflix, to have significant time gaps between seasons. Fortunately, there are no major strikes planned at the moment, so we might expect a smoother timeline for its arrival, hopefully not another three years.

Creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar hinted at the potential release of Season 3 of “Wednesday” during the launch of Season 2. They disclosed that the writers’ room for the third season had been established, and they were well on their way with plans for eight more episodes. Their preferred timeline suggests filming might commence towards the end of 2025, aiming for a return in 2027. The showrunners stated that at least 18 months would be needed to complete production.

Based on potential filming timelines for Season 3 of Wednesday, a release as early as 2027 is possible. If production starts by the end of 2025 or early 2026, it might be ready to stream on Netflix around the same seasonal timeframe as Season 2. However, considering the show’s nature and overall mood, a release closer to Halloween could be more suitable, potentially splitting it into two parts – Part 1 in September and Part 2 in October.

Wednesday Season 3’s Cast: Who Is Likely To Return?

In essence, for Season 3, it’s highly probable that the majority of Wednesday’s main actors will reprise their roles. The lead character, played by Ortega, is expected to return, although she has several other projects lined up before then, such as Taika Waititi’s Sci-Fi film Klara and the Sun, Cathy Yan’s The Gallerist, and a yet-untitled J.J. Abrams movie alongside Glen Powell. Moreover, most of the Addams family members are likely to make a comeback, including Lumley, and Enid Sinclair, portrayed by Emma Myers, is anticipated to have an important role again.

The main questions revolve around certain characters’ potential returns. Following Principal Dort’s demise, Steve Buscemi’s character may not reappear on the show. It appears Christina Ricci’s involvement in the Addams family universe has concluded permanently. Billie Piper’s Isadora Capri and Hunter Doohan’s Tyler Galpin are likely to play significant roles together. Whether Gwendoline Christie will resurface as Larissa Weems or Lady Gaga returns as Rosaline Rotwood is yet to be determined.

Wednesday Season 3 Story: What Season 2 Sets Up

In the finale of Wednesday Season 2, several longstanding mysteries were finally unraveled. It turned out that Slurp was none other than Isaac Night, a former acquaintance of Gomez and the sibling of Francoise. Shockingly, Francoise is also Tyler’s mother and a Hyde, as revealed in her untimely demise at the end of the season. As Season 3 unfolds, we will delve deeper into Tyler’s struggles to accept his true nature and learn how to master it. In this endeavor, he receives assistance from Isadora, whose own father was a Hyde.

Regarding Wednesday, the protagonist, her tale unfolds outside of Nevermore. Together with Uncle Fester, she embarks on a quest to locate Enid. It was unveiled that Myers is an Alpha werewolf and has ventured into Canada. Adhering to the show’s primary theme of their bond, it appears that a significant chunk of Season 3 will involve Wednesday not only discovering Enid but also assisting her in accepting the truth about herself, maintaining her place at Nevermore, and ensuring she keeps a friend there too.

As a movie reviewer, here’s my take on it:

In my opinion, when Wednesday makes her way back home in season 2, she’ll find herself right in the middle of more trouble. This time around, we get some intriguing insights into Ophelia, who appears to have been held captive at the Frump family residence for quite a while. In one particularly chilling scene, Ophelia writes a menacing message on the wall, which seems destined to play a pivotal role in the narrative of season 3: “Wednesday must die.”

It’s clear that this cryptic warning will undoubtedly shake things up and drive the plot forward as we eagerly await the next installment.

Wednesday Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Netflix.
