Following four Annabelle spin-offs and two Nun spin-offs, we now have The Conjuring: The Last Rites as the fourth core film. Set in 1964, the Warrens are new to paranormal investigations, taking on a case involving a haunted full-length mirror that causes Lorraine (played by Vera Farmiga) to go into premature labor. Fast forward to 1986, and Lorraine and her husband Ed (Patrick Wilson) have a college-educated daughter and her fiancé, living peacefully for the moment. However, a Pennsylvania family, the Smurls, acquire the same haunted mirror, causing them and their family great distress, attracting media attention to their home. Unfortunately, none of the characters comment on the flocking media outside, but that’s a small detail.
In a curious twist, the stories of two families unfold simultaneously yet unknowingly linked by a mysterious mirror. As fate would have it, their lives intertwine over time in this intricate narrative, though the journey is slow and fragmented. The problem lies in the prolonged build-up, but ultimately, their paths are destined to cross as the Warrens seem to attract sinister and ill-willed individuals much like a supernatural magnet, culminating in a chaotic whirlwind of horror centered around a haunted house.
Although it’s approximately two hours long, the journey takes too much time, despite captivating action sequences that hark back to classic ’70s horror films such as The Amityville Horror, The Exorcist, and The Omen. Directed by Michael Chaves, who followed in James Wan’s footsteps on the first two films in this series, this latest offering has its high points but ultimately succumbs to the law of diminishing returns. Perhaps it’s now time to conclude the story surrounding the Warrens’ paranormal investigations.
