I’ve been absolutely captivated by the Elbaf Arc in One Piece, as it’s shedding light on the enigmatic figure of Shanks like never before! Despite his absence from this arc so far, he’s been the center of discussion for months on end. As an Emperor, his powers are legendary, but his mysterious nature rivals even that.
Shanks plays a crucial role in driving the story forward, serving as the source of Luffy’s pirate inspiration and the means to strengthen himself – though whether this was intentional or not remains uncertain. The seemingly ordinary devil fruit he possesses has proven to be one of the world’s most dangerous powers, as we discovered during the Wano Country Saga that Shanks had known about it all along. I can hardly wait to uncover more secrets about this intriguing character!
During the God Valley Incident, a one-year-old Shanks was discovered inside a treasure chest by Roger and Rayleigh. They raised him in the seas, and Shanks spent his teenage years there before Roger ventured towards Laughtale. Living as a pirate his whole life, Shanks’s future was set. After Roger’s passing, Shanks eventually established his own crew and rose to become an Emperor. He refused to acknowledge his lineage as a Celestial Dragon and aimed for the One Piece, although it seems there’s more to his ambitions than just that. The details about his enigma and separation from his family are still unclear, but we’ve moved one step closer to finding out the truth.
One Piece Shares First Glimpse at Shanks’ Mother

To date, our knowledge primarily revolves around Saint Garling Figarland, who is known as the father of Shanks and Shamrock. Yet, their mother has only been briefly mentioned in recent chapters. She was in God Valley approximately 39 years ago when the twins were just infants. The narrative doesn’t reveal her face, as we only saw her from behind, dressed in a dark gown and pushing a baby stroller. In this encounter with the locals, she is praised for the twins’ cuteness and their inherited red hair from her. The villagers also spoke of assisting the woman in raising the children since their father was not present at the time.

Around the same period as the God Valley Incident, which led to Shanks parting ways with his mom, occurred. The island they inhabited was brutally destroyed by the Celestial Dragons for their entertainment, leaving the natives dead. It’s uncertain how Shanks came to be in a treasure chest, but it’s plausible that someone hid him there to shield him from the chaos that ensued on the island. The identity of his mother has remained a significant enigma since Shanks’ lineage was disclosed, but now we at least understand she wasn’t one of the Celestial Dragons.
During that period, Garling apparently went with Shamrock while Roger was with Shanks. Although it’s conceivable that Garling might not be their biological father, this notion seems rather improbable given that in a flashback, Garling strongly resembles his sons. Unfortunately, the identity of Shanks’ mother remains uncertain, but there’s a possibility she suffered the same unfortunate fate as the rest of the island inhabitants.
One Piece’s Elbaf Arc Has Revealed Several Facts About Shanks

In Shank’s domain, Elbaf, we anticipated some backstory about his character. However, the storyline took an unexpected turn once more. For the first time, we encounter a new character named Shamrock, who shares that Shanks is already aware of his identity. But Shanks declines the offer to become a Celestial Dragon, despite the possibility that he could have effortlessly assumed the position given his unique circumstances, unlike Doflamingo’s family who willingly relinquished their titles.
Despite his choice to remain a pirate, it’s apparent that Shanks has other motives. In Chapter 1152, while Harald was under attack in Arurst Castle, Shanks and Gaban shared nostalgic moments. Here, Gaban referred to Shanks as the Child of Fate, though he didn’t clarify the title’s significance. Moreover, given that Shanks probably knew about Luffy’s Devil Fruit prior to its theft from the World Government, it seems plausible that he knows more about the world’s secrets than he reveals.
Excitedly diving into the unfolding tale of the Elbaf Arc, I can’t help but feel that we’ve only scratched the surface regarding the enigmatic Emperor’s past, possibly uncovering details about his mother’s destiny. As we near the conclusion of this epic manga saga, it won’t be long before all is revealed. And with the Elbaf Arc far from wrapping up, I can’t help but speculate that more shocking revelations are on the horizon, shedding light on the enigmatic Shanks and his ancestral lineage.
