The DC Universe is generating excitement with its forthcoming lineup of projects. The recent acclaim for James Gunn’s Superman reboot film has paved the way for the announcement of a sequel titled Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release in 2027. Prior to that, films like Supergirl and Clayface are under production for the silver screen. On the television front, the DC Universe is extending its reach with Season 2 of Gunn’s Peacemaker spinoff series and an upcoming Green Lantern TV show titled Lanterns.
As various storylines within the DC Universe intertwine, fans are curious about how the grittier style of the Green Lantern series known as “Lanterns” will fit into the larger “Gods and Monsters” narrative involving Superman. A notable character from the show might offer some insight on this connection (playing with words here – pun intended), hinting that his role in “Lanterns” could involve him as a DCU antagonist capable of annihilating an entire universe.

I’m thrilled to share that as an ardent supporter, I can confirm my involvement in an exciting new project called “Lanterns.” In this role, I’ll be portraying the character “William Macon,” a name that has sparked curiosity among DC Comics enthusiasts. Some fans speculate that this could be a disguise for a renowned antagonist in Green Lantern lore – none other than the notorious “Black Hand.”
Recently, I added fuel to the rumor mill by posting an intriguing image on social media, hinting at the characters some of us “Lanterns” actors might be playing. Attached was a contemplative emoji, suggesting that there could be more to our roles than meets the eye. Stay tuned for updates!
It has been confirmed that actor Ulrich Thomsen, known for his role in ‘Banshee’, will portray Sinestro, a once esteemed Green Lantern who turned against the Corps and tutored Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler). On the other hand, Paul Ben-Victor’s character from ‘The Wire’, “Antaan”, seems to be a misdirect. His character description mirrors that of Atrocitus, the leader of the vengeful Red Lanterns, who survived the destruction of his sector by the Manhunters. However, there have been few hints regarding Dillahunt’s ‘William Macon’, so his acknowledgment of this social media query could possibly suggest he is involved in the production.
Why Is Black Hand So Important to Green Lantern Lore?

In the world of comics, William Hand initially emerged as an outcast from a wealthy family and a brilliant inventor who took a dark turn into criminal activities. Over time, he enhanced his criminal persona and powers to become a formidable threat, utilizing a device from space brought to Earth by Atrocitus as part of the “Blackest Night” prophecy.
However, unaware to Hand, this cosmic artifact also served as a channel for an otherworldly entity that gradually took control over him. His mind became so warped that he tragically murdered his own family and himself. This act resulted in his reanimation as a corpse imbued with life by the first black power ring. He was then crowned as the embodiment of Death, joining other powerful figures like Ion, the incarnation of Green Lanterns’ willpower light.
During the period from 2009-2010, Black Hand played a crucial role in the cosmic crisis known as “Blackest Night” within DC Comics. It’s unclear if James Gunn’s DC Universe is planning to introduce an event similar to “Blackest Night” as its initial crossover, or if the “Lanterns” series will gradually set up such an event for future installments in the franchise. Regardless of the approach, Garret Dillahunt’s involvement is sure to spark excitement among fans.
Lanterns will premiere on HBO and stream on Max in early 2026.
