Kouji Mori, out of respect for his late friend Kentaro Miura, undertook what many considered an impossible task: continuing the narrative of the popular series “Berserk.” Collaborating with Studio Gaga’s artists, Mori is paying tribute to his departed colleague by completing Guts’ story. Yet, he hasn’t let that prevent him from creating new pieces of his own. In a recent interview, the manga author shared how Miura’s influence was evident in one of his latest works, which seemed heavily inspired by the world of the Black Swordman.
Mori shared that he drew his inspiration for D. Diver directly from Kentaro Miura himself, as he explained, “I’ve been creating manga with my late friend, manga artist Kentaro Miura, since our teenage years and we always consulted on everything. Miura repeatedly urged me, ‘You should create a hero who transforms to fight evil. You really need to draw that.’ As I was having trouble generating ideas, I began searching online and found a lot of anger about crime… Why do people endure such suffering? Why do they commit crimes and then get out of prison so quickly?
Berserk’s Influence Spreads

Mori explained how the Band of the Hawk influenced his latest manga, saying, “I began to ponder their significance. I thought to myself, ‘I want to best them.’ However, the concept of a revenge-driven hero has been portrayed in various ways before. Then, Miura suggested using the protagonist from another manga who can dive into dreams, and that’s how “D. Diver” was born. The initial manga that sparked this idea was more lighthearted and focused on school life. So, a blend of Miura’s advice and my original concept led to a manga about a character who journeys through dreams and hunts evil, as it makes sense for him to transform due to being in a dream world.
If you haven’t encountered the manga titled “D. Diver,” let me share with you Young Animal’s description penned by writer Kouji Mori. The story revolves around Kagura, a university student pursuing a law career who frequently finds himself caught between reality and dreams, as his dreams are so vivid that he struggles to discern one from the other. In a seminar practical, he witnesses a murder trial in his dream, whereupon he starts dreaming about punishing the perpetrators with his own hands. This dream recurs repeatedly, with Kagura continuing to exact justice. As he uncovers the connection between these dreams and real-life events, he becomes a “dark hero” who averts crime by defeating wrongdoers in his dreams. In a world where it’s challenging to combat evil through brute force in reality, this is a grounded yet heartfelt tale of an “evolving hero” using his fists in the realm of dreams.
