As a dedicated fan of the iconic world of Final Fantasy 7, I can’t help but be captivated by Tifa – a character who stands out amongst the stellar cast. Amidst the passionate discussions about whether Cloud’s affections should lie with her or Aerith, it’s important to remember that Tifa is a remarkable individual in her own right. Her relationship with Cloud may be heartwarming, but it doesn’t define who she is as a character.
What makes Tifa truly intriguing is her complex journey, much like other characters in FF7. Throughout the development process, she underwent significant transformations that add layers to her personality. Moreover, there are subtle nuances within her interactions with her companions, such as Aerith, that underscore the strength of her bonds. While Aerith may be seen as a romantic rival, their friendship runs deep and adds depth to both characters’ stories.
Tifa, who was Cloud’s childhood friend, takes on the role of the party’s monk. Her animosity towards Shinra stems from the Nibelheim incident, causing her to become a member of AVALANCHE. Despite her kind demeanor and deep concern for her companions, Tifa is capable of delivering punches more powerful than any other party member, making her an intimidating adversary.
1. Tifa was Supposed to Lose her Memory
Initially, the creators planned for Tifa to sustain severe injuries from Cloud during a time when he was under Sephiroth’s control, resulting in her losing memories and acquiring scars on her back. This concept would have added intrigue to their interactions, but it might have been too much to have multiple main characters dealing with memory problems. Ultimately, it’s beneficial that this plan wasn’t implemented because Tifa’s character becomes more emotionally resonant when she recalls and questions her own actions or if they’re influenced by the trauma of Nibelheim, thereby adding realism and depth to her personality.
2. Tifa Is Protected from Mako Poisoning
In the original game, when Tifa accidentally ventures into the Lifestream, she encounters Mako, a form of energy extracted from this stream. Since Mako can also cause poisoning, as demonstrated by Cloud’s confused memories after being exposed to it due to Hojo’s experiments post-Nibelheim incident, Tifa too develops Mako poisoning during her time in the Lifestream. However, remarkably, she manages to escape the ordeal without any lasting damage to her mind.
It’s revealed that even after her death, Aerith continued to look out for her friend Tifa by using her connection with the Lifestream to protect her. This suggests that Aerith’s affection and concern for her friends did not end with her passing. Furthermore, Tifa seems to have been immune to Geostigma in the movie “Advent Children” possibly due to this ongoing protection from Aerith, as she was exposed to the disease directly but remained unscathed.
3. Tifa was Created After Aerith’s Death was Decided
In the course of creation, the team initially featured three characters, with one being destined to perish, ultimately sealing Aerith’s fate. Subsequently, Tifa emerged as a character designed to replace Aerith, eventually becoming Cloud’s romantic interest post-Aerith’s demise. Despite not appearing in the original party, Tifa’s well-developed and multidimensional characterization made her a valuable addition to the game. It’s fascinating that she wasn’t part of the team initially, but it’s clear that both the original Final Fantasy 7 and its remake trilogy would have been significantly altered without Tifa’s inclusion.
In the realm of franchises, Final Fantasy’s games are not just renowned for a single aspect. Rather, their appeal is multifaceted, encompassing the intriguing characters, captivating storylines, and stirring soundtracks they present. Characters like Tifa Lockhart, with her unique backstory, character traits, and aspirations, seamlessly blend into this ensemble, making her a figure that fans want to support and eagerly watch unfold on the screen.
