The Addams Family, known for its long-lasting popularity and dark yet endearing essence, has once again captivated audiences through Netflix’s series titled “Wednesday.” This revival has paid homage to the original while also showcasing fresh, bold innovations. While it remains true to its roots, it doesn’t shy away from taking some risks – starting with Wednesday Addams discovering her powers in Season 1 and continuing into Season 2 with a surprising retcon for a character that has been around for six decades. These changes were not what fans might have anticipated before the current season began, but some observant viewers might have pieced it together before the second part of Season 2 was released.
For many of us, Thing has been an integral member of the Addams Family since time immemorial. Indeed, young Wednesday and Pugsley have always known their lives to be intertwined with Thing’s presence. Yet, it turns out that previous generations didn’t enjoy this bond, for Thing joined the family at roughly the same time as Gomez and Morticia – a revelation made apparent in the season finale of Wednesday. Intriguingly enough, the rewrite of the season’s narrative centers around none other than Thing himself.
Finally Getting His Own Origin Story
In the second season of “Wednesday,” not only did they revise Thing’s background but also presented his origin story. The narrative unfolds with a character named Isaac Night, a legend’s inventor, resurrected as a zombie. Before his demise, Isaac had his own backstory that connected him to the Addams family. He was once Gomez’s closest friend, but his betrayal of the young man led to tragic consequences, a lesson learned by many who cross paths with the “Addams Family.
Significantly, Isaac didn’t pay an identical price, for Morticia Frump (previously) amputated Isaac’s hand just before his demise. This was the origin of the cherished character named Thing. Upon waking up, Thing had no recollection of his past or betrayal, so the family chose to ignore it. However, when it was unearthed again (as is typical in the Addams Family), things got a bit more complex.
Always Part of the Addams Family
It’s possible you’re curious about how Thing received its name, and here’s an interesting fact: It’s actually an anagram of Night. The pair simply rearranged the letters to get Thing. The answer was right before our eyes all along, if only we had considered looking at it from that perspective.
Despite learning about his mysterious past, this character’s identity won’t be dictated by it. He doesn’t require physical completeness to feel complete, nor does he need Isaac Night. Instead, he has his chosen family – the Addams Family – whom he will always choose over anything else.
Wednesday is available to stream on Netflix.
