New Live-Action Disney Remake Is Dominating Disney+ (& a Sequel Is Already on the Way)

Just like how the Marvel Cinematic Universe has varied in its box office performance, Disney’s live-action adaptations of their classic animated films have also shown a mix of results this year. On one end of the spectrum, movies such as Snow White faced considerable controversy and managed to earn only $205.6 million globally, causing Disney to temporarily halt other live-action remakes, like Tangled. Conversely, Lilo & Stitch has been a major success, tapping into nostalgia for the 2002 original animation. It has become one of the biggest summer hits and is currently the only American film this year to surpass the $1 billion milestone. Not surprisingly, Lilo & Stitch continues to thrive on home media platforms as well.

Based on FlixPatrol’s streaming popularity ratings, the live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch” is currently number one on Disney+. It significantly outranks titles like “Thunderbolts” and the “Incredibles” series. In the Top 10 on Disney+, the animated sequel “Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch has a Glitch” comes in at 7th place.

Disney Is Already Developing a Live-Action Lilo & Stitch Sequel

The animated movie Lilo & Stitch broke records during its Memorial Day weekend release in theaters, earning an impressive $182.6 million over the extended four-day period. Not long after, Disney announced plans for a live-action sequel to Lilo & Stich. As of now, no official release date has been scheduled, as the project is still in its initial stages of development. However, it’s been confirmed that Chris Sanders will be penning the script for Lilo & Stitch 2. Sanders is recognized as the voice of Stitch and was a co-writer and co-director for the original animated Lilo & Stitch film.

Lilo & Stitch” ranks as the fourth most financially successful Disney live-action remake ever, surpassed only by “Aladdin“, “Beauty and the Beast“, and “The Lion King“. Critics have also praised it, giving it a fresh 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The positive word of mouth and enthusiasm for the franchise have pushed “Lilo & Stitch” to the top of the 2025 box office earnings, with only one film – the Chinese animated sequel “Ne Zha 2“, which recently surpassed $2 billion in earnings – having earned more money at the box office this year.

Due to the immense popularity of Lilo & Stitch during the summer months, it’s unsurprising that the film has taken over Disney+’s offerings. As the movie was still playing in cinemas, the franchise attracted a significant number of viewers on the streaming platform as fans realized there was an abundance of additional Lilo & Stitch content to enjoy. Now that the movie is available for streaming, families and fans are taking advantage of watching it at home as part of their Disney+ subscriptions, making Lilo & Stitch easily accessible to a wider audience since its digital release in late July.

It’s well-known that “Lilo & Stitch” has been one of Disney’s most financially successful films. However, it’ll be intriguing to see how its sequel performs at the ticket counters. Some of Disney’s previous live-action sequels didn’t perform as well, such as “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Alice Through the Looking Glass”. Last year’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” started off slow but eventually thrived due to scant competition. Nevertheless, it seems likely that “Lilo & Stitch 2” will follow in its predecessor’s footsteps as a blockbuster success, given Sanders’ involvement. With him on board, the sequel can count on a compelling narrative at its heart, which should help it resonate with viewers.
