Ryan Reynolds thinks John Candy was ahead of his time.
In my role as a producer on the riveting documentary, “John Candy: I Like Me,” I’ve had the distinct privilege of gaining unique insights into the lasting impact John left after his untimely passing at just 43 due to a heart attack. One of the most intriguing discoveries was John’s profound interest in mental health – a subject that was close to his heart as an actor, and it seems, as a person too.
Ryan shared with TopMob News’ Francesca Amiker during the documentary’s world premiere at TIFF on September 4th that he hadn’t realized beforehand the profound spiritual foundation this person had. He explained that he was unaware that this individual straddled both the role of a people-pleaser and someone actively working on mental health, which was rarely discussed back then. Even though it can still be a delicate topic, Ryan pointed out that if you’re a people-pleaser and dealing with mental health challenges, it’s essential to talk about them.
In my perspective, being a people-pleaser can often lead to an unexpected predicament. You see, I always strive not to burden others with my problems, but the irony lies in the fact that the best way to alleviate personal struggles is by sharing them. However, this desire to keep issues private and the necessity to speak up about them seem to be at odds with each other.
With John’s background insights and his personal experiences, Ryan now gains a fresh outlook regarding the demise of the open-about-anxiety and panic attacks Saturday Night Live veteran.
As for the place where he resided, I truly believe it held a profound impact on him, a mix of depth and tragic consequences – that’s my honest opinion. It seems to have played a significant role in his untimely departure from our presence.
The sentiments expressed by the star of Deadpool can be found resonating in the trailer for John Candy: I Like Me, and similarly, Conan O’Brien points out that the entertainment industry often proves to be detrimental for those who prioritize pleasing others.
“You can’t really do favors for people,” the comedian added. “It’s a bottomless cup of coffee.”
And indeed, despite the mountains of success John achieved, there was underlying pain and struggle.
Steve Martin expressed in the trailer, “There are certain experiences that are simply uncomfortable. There isn’t much you can do to change that. However, your attitude toward life is what ultimately shapes your identity.
However, contrary to the image he portrayed publicly, John’s genuine self was marked by frequent laughter and affection. This aspect of his character notably resonated with Macaulay Culkin, his costar in “Home Alone.
“I remember John caring,” Macaulay said, “when not a lot of people did.”
