In simpler, more conversational terms: The movie “Alien: Covenant,” directed by Fede Álavarez, successfully captivated a new generation of film enthusiasts. By tapping into the anxieties of Gen Z about the future, it told a story of young adults desperate to leave their troubled mining colony for a promised utopia. However, unlike traditional “Alien” movies, this time two of our main characters actually achieved their goal of reaching a better world – but not without a dramatic twist.
If the journey towards the anticipated “Alien: Romulus” sequel were to go as flawlessly as planned, there wouldn’t be a need for it. However, recent news might (or might not) cause some uncertainty among fans about the upcoming “Alien” movie – Fede Álvarez will no longer be its director.
Information about the change of directors originated directly from Fede Álvarez himself. During his appearance at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights 2025 debut in Hollywood, he took time to speak with the press on the red carpet. Here’s what he shared with Too Fab about the Alien: Romulus sequel:
News of the director switch was personally announced by Fede Álvarez himself. Making an appearance at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights 2025 premiere in Hollywood, he took a moment to chat with the press on the red carpet. This is what he told Too Fab about the Alien: Romulus sequel:
We’ve completed the script for a follow-up to ‘Romulus’. However, I’ll be handing over the directorial duties for this project. I will be producing it alongside Ridley Scott, and at present, we are actively searching for a fresh director to join us.
Alvarez emphasized to fans that changing directors is standard procedure for a movie series. Even though he won’t be directly in charge, he emphasized his significant contribution to the storyline of the sequel. Moreover, he mentioned his collaboration with Ridley Scott as a producer, assuring everyone that they would jointly guide the project.
Alvarez mentioned that typically, different filmmakers take turns making films, except for Ridley. However, they felt so passionate about the story they began with ‘Romulus’, that they chose to write the continuing narrative themselves. They cherish the story and are now searching for a director who is equally enthusiastic to delve deep into it.

The upcoming news about Alien might spark disagreement among fans, as not everyone was satisfied with Fede Álvarez’s take on Alien: Romulus. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that Alien: Romulus did introduce some fresh intrigue to the Alien universe, such as the “Z-01” serum, which could unlock human enhancement, and furthering the story of Rain Carradine (Cailee Spaeny) and her android sibling Andy (David Jonsson).
It’s likely that horror movie enthusiasts, particularly those who are fans of “Alien”, would be thrilled to see some contemporary horror filmmakers take the reins for the next installment. The Philippou brothers, directors of “Bring Her Back”, could very well be at the top of that list. They were almost involved with the “Street Fighter” movie and are reportedly working with Marvel Studios. Another pair who might catch fans’ attention is Oz Perkins, director of “Longlegs”, and Zach Cregger, director of “Weapons”. If we’re looking for an up-and-coming talent, Daniel Espinosa, director of “Life” (2017) and “Morbius”, could be a promising choice.
Alien: Romulus is streaming on Hulu-Disney+.
